Anybody going? A friend of mine is thinking about it, just wondering.

The ticket request count for US only trails the requests coming from Brazil at this point. Granted, quite a few of those are either ticket brokers looking to sell them back off for profit or will be people supporting other nations...however, I'm hoping for a large contingency of US supporters

My friend is from Ivory Coast but lives here now, he will definitely be cheering for the US. He's hoping to make the final game, at least the tickets are available for it.

Had seriously considered flying family in with Frequent Flyer miles, but daughter getting married in Dec., and a Kenyan Safari still holds the lead priority-wise. Don't get me wrong; we ain't rich or nothin', just have FF miles assets. We'll watch what we can see on TV.

I bet you those World Cup tickets aren't cheap. I would say 100-200 dollars each for a game and for the World Cup Final would be like paying for tickets for a Super Bowl.

Tickets arent bad. Travelling inside Brazil and lodging is ridiculous.

US in with Germany, Ghana (again) and Portugal. Ouch! QuitoTiger, you got a much more favorable draw with Switzerland, France and Honduras.

RE: World Cup in Brazil
Great order in the games for us.

Ghana
then Portugal in the rainforest after their Germany game
then a German team that'll have probably already sewn up the group.

Yup.

We got a regular time draw against Ghana in the last world cup(lost in AET) and Portugal beyond Ronaldo and Moutinho isnt that great. 4 pts is definitely possible in this group and 4 pts gets you to R16 assuming Turkmany gets 9pts.

We at least have all year to prep for Ghana - we don't get 3 there, we are in trouble.

At least we know that we will not be beaten by Ghana three Cups in row in first round of knock out games.

How can they justify having us ranked 14th having to play the #2 and #5 teams in group play? Eight groups there should be no way you can have two of the top five in same group.

2 things.

1. We didnt play Ghana in the knockout stage in 2006. It was the last group game after the loss to the Czechs and the bloody draw against Italy(**** you De Rossi).

2. The FIFA rankings are trash. They have the Swiss ranked ahead of Brazil. The ELO rankings are much better. In those we have the 3rd team in Germany, 8th in Portugal, 13th in the US, and 33rd in Ghana. If you take teams that didnt qualify(Czechs, Ukraine, Danes, and Serbs) out of the rankings Ghana is 29th. If you think of the groups as an S-Curve like the NCAA tournament, that isnt completely out of the margin of error especially considering geographic group restrictions.

If anyone can ***** its the Socceroos who get the 2nd(Spain), 5th(Holland), and 10th(Chile) ranked teams by the ELO ratings in their group or Los Ticos who get the 7th(England), 9th(Uruguay), and 11th(Italy) in their group.

Besides Argentina and Brazil in relatively easy groups, I think Colombia got an easy draw for the opening round of the World Cup with Greece, Japan and Ivory Coast in their same group. If they don't get to the knockout phase I will be shocked.

You are probably right for the tickets and traveling and lodging will be expensive, but I would be concerned with my safety with protests over wages are still happening in Brazil. Although it is not happening in all the cities like it was six months, ago, people can definitely take advantage of the situation.

The protesters aren't a safety issue, for the most part, for people going unless a revolt starts.

The safety issues in Brazil are ones that are due to a country where there is a small amount of very rich people and a vast amount of dirt poor who are being kicked out of their neighborhoods and looking to rob an American/Brit/German/Canajun so they can feed their family for another day.

I knew we'd get a tough group. I want to advance of course, but I will be happy if we beat Ghana and get nothing else. I don't want to lose to them again.

If we follow our normal trajectory, we'll come home with no more than 1 point. Let's see if Klinsmann can break us out of that rut. He is different than all the past USA coaches, and he's been getting pretty good results so far.

our normal trajectory?

We've made it past the group stage in every World Cup we've qualified for not inside Europe except 1950.

1930---Semis
1994---R16
2002---QF
2010---R16

The round of 16 is my expectation. Anything less is a disappointment considering the depth of the squad, form over the last year, the geographic advantages, and the meteorological advantages especially over Portugal in Manaus just days after they chase Germany around for 90 minutes.

4 points is what we should get and 4 points will get you through about 60% of the time.
