Gee, who didn't see this coming ...

To recap: P-6 schools force powers to be to revamp NIT selection process heavily in favor of ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big XII, Pac-12 and SEC. Mid- and low-major regular-season conference champions that don't get an NCAA Tournament invite are no longer guaranteed a spot in the consolation tournament.

Selection Sunday: P6 programs — as anyone with half a brain predicted — are the first to decline a chance to play in the NIT.

You can't make this up 03-rotfl
Did the major conferences actually ask for the NIT slots or were they just granted? I can't image actually wanting these slots?
That proposed Fox tournament has always been an empty threat without a huge amount of money. With the way the portal is currently I suspect a lot more teams will decline in the future.
This is 100% a by-product of the portal era. P5 coaches want to go all-in on the portal and NIL and view any postseason that isn't the NCAA Tournament as a distraction from what now matters.
Feel free to update this list.

"No thanks. We know you changed the selection process because of the collective politicking of our conferences, but tbh we don't care enough to play."

Big East: St. John's
B1G: Indiana
SEC: Ole Miss

I wanted Memphis to go and get some experience for the returning players. Oh well.

100%

March 2023: "The NIT matters less and less every season."

October 2023: "We changed the NIT selection process because FOX might start a competing consolation tournament for the P6 schools and we don't want to lose them."

March 2024: "P6 schools sure don't seem interested in the NIT."

They should have just left it alone the way it was
The NIT used to be my favorite tourney because the teams were talented and played for something. Wonder what that is going to look like this year.
UCF vs USF will be a good first round matchup!
Ohio State will play Cornell.

They should just change it back to the way it was.

Why did the NCAA cave into changing the format?
Tom Crean just gave an epic speech on ESPN for teams opting out of the NIT.
