“In something of a domino effect, the Smith family ($50 million) donation for the Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium will free up cash for the Memphis Grizzlies and the City of Memphis to do renovations at FedExForum.”

I thank God for Fred Smith and FedEx.
He should buy locks for his trailers.

I thank God for Fred Smith and FedEx.

The LB still gets $120M from the state. The university is also going to raise an additional $50M, and possibly take over control of the stadium, per the article.

That brings the total reno # for SBLS to $220M. Nice for half a new stadium.

Let's do it again in a few years and finish the whole dang place. I vote for knocking down about 20,000 seats, lol, and replacing them with more game day amenities.

Then a ticket to a big game will mean something.

I hope the council does the right thing.

Time to open my wallet to add my pittance. 03-wink
Congrats Memphis! The transfer of ownership is a huge accomplishment!

Good get and I agree. Schools need to be going to smaller stadiums with more amenities. The writing is on the wall.
So the new owner of the Liberty Bowl will be the University of Memphis?

Yes, subject to city council approval. “The City of Memphis, aided by a $50 million donation from FedEx Corporation founder Fred Smith and his family, could transfer ownership of Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium to the University of Memphis Foundation…”

It's always nice having a benevolent billionaire in your corner. Thank you Fred.

Also saw report that we, the University of memphis, will own the land immediately surrounding the Liberty Bowl. So it will be a situation like the south campus and technically, although there is separation from the main campus, it will be an on-campus stadium. Note that the south campus has a lot of our sports facilities already and everyone considers that on campus.
right on.

50m is nice, but the transfer of ownership or at least full control is big. I didn't count this as lack of a OCS as a knock, after all the Liberty Bowl is practically on campus any way, but thats a formality checked off the list if the council approves when it comes to invites. Big step that puts you more on level with USF instead of Temple.

Hopefully this will also lead to the AAC being the first call and a fututure partner to the actual bowl game itself. I do like the LB game, good atmosphere, excellent local support, decent venue getting better and its location is great foe 90% of the league.
Upper left is the stadium. Bottom right is the south campus. UM sort of in the middle.

Better shot showing proximity of stadium to campus. Liberty (upper left), campus (lower right).

Article headline and byline say university will gain "control" of Liberty Stadium. But in the text, it says "transfer ownership" to the U of M Foundation.

I'm not sure what distinction they are making, if any.

Probably will be like a 99 year lease for a dollar a year while the school gets control and responsibility of upkeep and improvements. Seems to be the old fall back for government entites to keep actual ownership while defacto giving someone else the property.

I believe the "transfer ownership" part will happen, if they pass the resolution. On another thread, I read that there was only one dissenting voice on the entire council when it was informally discussed over a conference call. I'm very optimistic this will come to fruition.

Talking out your rear again, I see. Another clown show, and it's on brand for you. From the article:

Quote:The Frederick W. Smith Family, headed by the founder and executive chairman of FedEx, has committed a $50 million challenge gift to the University of Memphis for renovations to Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, the home of Memphis Tiger Football, which marks the largest gift in University history!

Additionally, a Memphis City Councilman has introduced a resolution to allocate and appropriate $120 million in State grant funding to go towards renovations of the stadium, as well as transfer ownership of the stadium to the University of Memphis Auxiliary Services Foundation.

the trailers are sealed as they leave wherever they are loaded. (My older brother owns his own trucking company, along with his wife)
The seal must be broken by the receiving agency before the truck is unloaded.
Bad people are gonna rob anything they can.
They have hit trains in the Memphis area, Amazon and Fed Ex delivery workers, now they are going after big rig trucks.
clt says this is great news!

would the memphis fans prefer that $ to build an on campus stadium?
