Never underestimate the travails of November games against vastly "overmatched" opponents. Mick's one team losing to Presbyterian College was a prime example.

UC taking care of business last night was job one. Wes needs a big stack of wins before January.

This is even further amplified by the fact that the transfer portal has allowed for more talented players to filter down to the mid-major/low-major level. Oh, you're a high 4-star recruit buried on the roster at Kentucky? Come over to EKU and play 30 minutes per game. You used to light it up in high school and can't see the floor at Baylor? Come to Lamar and we'll give you the green light everytime you touch the ball.

Nowadays, the James Madisons over Michigan States in the regular season isn't all that uncommon. You just never really know what type of team is being rolled out there when you're facing a bunch of directional schools night after night in non-conference play.

Interesting observation. I suppose that might be tempered some by NIL. Will those mid-majors/low-majors have the dollars to offer, or will those players be happy to ride the pine at a deep pockets school such as Alabama or UNC for a bigger payday?
I watched Florida Gulf Coast at Indiana last night and for most of the game FGC actually looked like they were equal or better.

IU had a 3 minute or so burst at home late in the second half that erased a deficit.

That's a really good point, the push and pull between playing time and NIL is definitely a dynamic that will be interesting to watching over the coming seasons.
Big boy program money...

Quote:Kansas announced an amended five-year rolling contract Tuesday that will make Bill Self the highest paid coach in college basketball. Self is set to make approximately $53 million over the next five years according to the amended contract released by KU.

Self will be paid more than $13 million in the contract's first year. Kentucky's John Calipari was paid $8,533,483 in 2022-23 according to USA Today. Self's deal is believed to be the most lucrative deal ever for a basketball coach at a public university.

Among the details on Self's salary from the amended contract:

At the conclusion of each contract year, another year is added to the deal.

Self will earn a one-time, $5 million retention bonus if he serves out the first five years of the contract.

Self's deal also includes a provision in his contract that allows the renegotiation of terms following the 2025-26 season.

Self, 60, has won 773 games, two national championships and 20 conference championships in his Naismith Hall of Fame career spanning 30 seasons. The Jayhawks have won 498 games since the start of the 2006-07 season, which is the most of any team in a major conference. Kansas has been a top-four seed in every NCAA Tournament since the 2000-2001 season.

I didn't see it but impressed they won in the fashion they did after the emotional win over MSU. A second straight road win to boot...

Jeremiah Davenport continuing his blistering shooting at Arkansas through two games...

18% from the field
22% from 3

Glad to have had him on our team support our city...but also not exactly upset he's on another roster this year.
