Police haven't been able to determine a motive. Here's your motive, he was a savage animal who liked hurting and killing people, he didn't need a reason. I'm still sensing a pattern here.
The world is... that much... a better place now.

Yeah it is.
In 1974, a family — mother, father, two small children — were found murdered in their home in Wichita, Kansas (2 older siblings were at school when it happened). Today, we know that the crime was the work of Dennis Rader, the so-called “BTK” serial killer. But at the time, and for many years later, nobody had any idea of the who or the why. It may be that this case today — like the Wichita killings of half a century ago — has no discernible “motive” at all, but simply represents nothing more than a sick person listening to the dark voices in their own head.

By the way, the Wichita case got some national attention. It partially inspired a young writer, Thomas Harris, to try and imagine what kind of person would do such a thing. He came up with the novel Red Dragon, which introduced Hannibal Lecter to the world of fiction.
