I have a friend that has a radio show down in Ruston and he is a huge advocate of the G5 separating from the P5 and having their own National Championship.

His Rationale
1. No G5 will EVER have a shot a winning the NC against the P5 teams
2. G5 schools are at a huge disadvantage when it comes to the transfer portal
A. A player going from a G5 to P5 has a much bigger negative impact than in the opposite direction
B. NIL (enough said on that)

My Rationale
1. Why would you devalue your own product?
A. The minute you separate yourself the television dollars will drop
B. The payout for the money games (if they even continue) will drop and we'll see more P5 vs lower P5 OOC games.

What are your thoughts?
Not if we can help it. The G5 would officially turn into the new FCS/1-aa. Most P5 teams don't have a chance at the title either, let alone making the playoffs.
The G5 is never going to give up its cut of the CFP money for a post-season that won't make much money.

And let's be real, if it were about national championships a majority of the P5 would have to shut down as well.
How long has he advocated for a split? Because for the first time ever we’ll have G5 representation in the playoff starting next season. Sure that could go away, but for now we will have the most access that we’ve ever had.
No. We just moved up from FCS, I don’t want to do that just to end up in a de facto FCS again.

Yeah, force the P5 to bring in a hatchetman to do the dirty work for all to see.

No on separation.
No, no. And hell no.

Sounds like your friend is an idiot.
Separating doesn't solve or address any of the problems or issues under his rationale. They all exist in a world where we separate, only we now have a diminished stature.[/align]

Or a fan of a top P5 team like an LSU or Bama.
Nope the is a separation it's call FCS.
No.

If the P5 separate from us though I’d like to see a bigger playoff among our ranks. 16 seems about right.

Even without the 12 team playoff, there was already a path for a G5. Cincinnati did it in 2021. I would be against a split even with a 4 team playoff. A 12 team playoff makes staying together a no brainer.
No but what I would like to see is more beneficial cooperation amongst the G5 conferences. Maybe a commissioner of sorts, with a very defined role and objective, to promote our game and what we bring to the table.

I'm in complete agreement that there should not be a split. He is really hung up on the G5 teams getting an opportunity for a national championship. Now, if you listen to his radio show, he makes a great argument and he absolutely goes more in depth than what I felt like typing out. That said, he's an Auburn (undergraduate) and latech (graduate) guy so elitism (on this topic) fits. What he does differently than most though is present it as a G5 advocate.

What I would recommend is that we flood his phone with calls to argue AGAINST his proposal.

That’s exactly it. The plan all along from the Ps has been to starve us out so WE initiate the split. That way they get what they want (all the money to themselves) without them having to finally just admit they’ve lost all interest in a collegiate athletics model because they’re really professional sports businesses. If they pull the trigger, they’ll have to explain why, and that’ll leave them with a lot of political and financial (i.e. tax) implications they don’t want.

The new NIT selection process is just their latest attempt to get us to surrender.
Everyone else has already said it, but I'll say it too. No.

We - the G5 - have all worked too hard to go back to being in a lower division, which is effectively what a separation would be.

I think the P5 will separate from the NCAA and form their own governing body first. At that point we will probably just stop playing them anyway.

He has advocated that as well

It’s an interesting take … ..

RE: Your Rationale #1. I believe that to be a moot point. Whether there is separation, or not, Devaluation is already baked into the cake. If we were all on a level playing field, your devaluation concern would be valid.

They’re (P5) Varsity.
We’re (G5) JV.

You're right that there is devaluation going on but we aren't doing it to ourselves. This would be the G5 devaluing their own product on top of what we already see from the NCAA, P5's, and ESPN
