What if conferences only utilized backfill expansion to the same number of schools they lost? Who would have made the cut? Who would’ve missed? Predatory expansion is not the same.
Here’s one scenario: Oklahoma and Texas announce they are leaving the 10-school XII for the SEC. The XII announces it is expanding to 12 from AAC/IND schools. The AAC which recently was at 12 but now is at 8 announces expansion to 14. What if the XII just expanded back to 10 and the AAC just expanded back to 12? What schools would’ve missed the cut?
XII: My guess is Central Florida and Houston miss out. Houston has been said to have been the final school chosen. BYU makes too much to be excluded and Cincinnati seemed to be a clear “next man up” option to me.
AAC: My guess is Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, and Rice would’ve been left behind because those markets were already covered by Central Florida, East Carolina, Houston, and SMU.
CUSA: My guess is the conference returns to 14 from 9 (losing 2 to AAC and 3 to Sun Belt) with the same 5 additions it made in our timeline.
Once the PAC implodes, the XII is in predatory expansion mode and still adds the 4 schools it did and becomes a 14-school conference.

The PAC was never at 16, though. Perhaps the PAC goes to 12 with some combination of MWC and AAC schools. The ACC hadn’t lost members this round so additions weren’t technically “backfill.” If they did lose 2, I doubt they bring in SMU.

I meant to say the Big XII. I fixed my mistake in the original post.
I was at the UC XII road tour when they stopped in Columbus.
