Jax St. (2-0) 4-1 @ MTSU (0-1) 1-4 - Wed. 8:00 ESPNU - >MTSU-4.5<
The Gamecocks will come strutting into the heart of Tennessee following a thrilling come from behind win at SHSU against a winless but perky Bearkat squad. JSU has a lot to crow about with their hot start this season. MTSU on the other hand, is limping their way through only one win so far and that was to lowly FCS Murray St. by only three TDs. Needless to say the Blue Raiders haven’t done a lot of raiding this season. I don’t think this midweek game will be any different and I’m surprised MTSU is favored. I think the the Gamecocks will be crowing all the way back to Alabama with a comfortable victory. 04-rock

FIU (0-2) 3-2 @ NMSU (0-1) 2-3 - Wed. 9:00 CBSSN - >NMSU-4.5<
The Swamp Panthers will stalk their way out to the western desert to take on some rowdy Aggies in New Mexico. These Panthers have shown their claws this season and have taken a few more bites out of opposing teams than we expected. But these Aggies are gun slingers and have improved their aim over the last two seasons. They’ll be gunnin’ for big game trophy this wednesday. I fully expect New Mexico St. to come out on top in this game. 04-rock

SHSU (0-1) 0-4 @ Liberty (2-0) 4-0 - Thu. 7:00 CBSSN - >LU-17.5<
The Bearkats will come creeping into the Virginia mountains hoping to snuff out these Flames before they become an inferno. Sammy is pretty desperate and hungry for a win. However Liberty’s Flames are being stoked by some pretty good coaching plus good offensive and defensive fuel for this fire. I’m already beginning to smell BBQed pussycat. Barring a major letdown, Liberty should win this game and cover the spread. 04-rock

WKU (1-0) 3-2 @ La. Tech (2-0) 3-3 - Thu. 8:00 ESPNU - >WKU-5.5<
The Hilltoppers are coming off a strong showing against MTSU in the big rivalry game. The Bulldogs are coming off an ugly win against not so much a big rival UTEP in the west Texas desert. I can understand after last week’s outcomes why WKU is favored on the road against a team with a very similar record. The Hilltoppers are still teying to climb the hill and put together 4 strong quarters. La. Tech is looking to get a leg up in the conference race. I think the Toppers are headed in the right direction and will claim a road win thursday night over the Bulldogs. 04-rock

Tenn St (2-2) @ Kennesaw St. (1-4) - Sat. 3:00 ESPN+ - >NL<
Nope. These owls ain’t got no hoot! Tennesse St. Tigers winner, winner, owl dinner! 03-hissyfit

I think the Gamecocks may have been the beneficiary of an easy schedule so far this season, and none of the teams we've played (including Coastal, who beat us) have done much to change that belief.

I still have JSU picked to win against Middle, but that's just because I don't usually pick against us, regardless of the opponent. But even then, I don't expect anything to be "comfortable" about this game.
I would have us lower middle of the conference.
Great breakdowns. I hope they all come true cuz you picked us to win!

Our game against FIU is probably going to be the turning point of the season, for better or worse. FIU is no longer a pushover, not that we at NMSU could every guarantee victory even against a pushover. We expected good things in Las Cruces this year and it’s understandable fans feel let down. But there’s still life left in us. But gotta get this win.
I'd agree that the winner of NMSU and FIU probably makes a bowl game and the loser might have a disappointment of a season.

I genuinely hope JSU wins to help us put pressure on Rick to retire. I fully expect us to win though. This screams we win this game. Historically we’re not very good against top competition but do well against average and below average teams. Come on Gamecocks, please help us out of this god awful contract!
My complaint is them showing the games at virtually the same time. Stagger those suckers so we get maximum publicity and exposure. Play at 6pm and 9pm when possible, or at least 6pm and 8pm.
- I'd take Jax State but an MTSU victory would not shock me. MTSU can be streaky. Jax St. has Liberty at home next Tues.
- I like New Mexico State to beat FIU at home.
- Can't see Sam Houston beating Liberty, especially when they struggle to run the ball.
- I like WKU easily over La. Tech
WKU/LaTech game has been elevated to ESPN
I watched the end of the Kennesaw State game. They've got a long, long way to go.

They remind me of what happened to WKU when we transitioned. We redshirted nearly everyone too and lost game after game at the wire.we were so close so many times. It was heartbreaking. It was a tough transition for us but we eventually turned it around. KSU has lost every game by one touchdown or less except one game and it was a 10 pt loss.

KSU is red shirting everybody this year due to the transition.

KSU is red shirting everybody this year due to the transition.

And what is going to stop all of those amazing redshirt players from entering the portal in the offseason after they see what a mess the program is right now?
This is a lot different than when Western moved up at that time the only way to build depth was within the program and that took a couple recruiting classes along with mass redshirting. Today you can do that in one season through the portal with college ready bodies.

For Western it meant losing a lot of games in the 4th qt in the first couple years. But in year 3 it started to produce a winning program because of the building of depth. Today it's just not needed and it's not clear the talent being redshirted is as good as you could have got in the portal....

Those players are not locked in like a player that has already went through the portal. So any talent that is being redshirted most likely will not stick around for year two. But the most important factor in winning in the G5 is system and having a coach that finds players with the "talent" to fit that system. Sometimes that doesn't mean those players will play as well or have the same talent going to a complete different system.

One other thing....

offense is KING. A great defense might get you a win or two and keep you in games but if you want to win. Make sure you have a offense that can produce points and at least very very good at running or passing
