I believe Big 12 also comes out Sept. 26.

I didn't even know there was a GSC or what it stood for until I clicked on the link.

To you, it's probably D2 basketball, but to me, it's my version of the Big East. Not that it is anywhere close on qualiry to the actual Big East, but "my version of the Big East." GSC teams seem to really slug it out more than a lot of southern leagues with the exceptions of the SoCon (need to find their schedule also) and the ACC. While the SEC is starting to care about basketball more, I just prefer the GSC!!
I really hate Penn State scheduling Big Ten games in the Palestra. They are not a/the Philly school. The fans they have out in the Hershey area or in the Lehigh Valley should get thrown a bone every once in awhile. That's "Penn State country." The Giant Center (Hershey) would be a great place, especially if the game was scheduled at a point where Hershey Park was open (even if for the holidays). PPL Center in Allentown is a smaller yet bougie venue.

But, hey, Palestra's right by HUP and CHOP. I'm sure the doctor and nurse alumni from both schools (PSU and Michigan) will walk over.

Well I am a PSU alum in the Philly area so we do exist. I would agree that games in other areas of the state are good. One issue with Hershey is there aren't as many Division I schools. Last year Penn State played Purdue in the Palestra. As much as Hershey is an attraction, do you think Purdue would rather play in Hershey or Philadelphia? And good luck getting Purdue to play in Allentown. I do remember Syracuse playing a game in Wilkes Barre (I kid you not!) because Gerry McNamara (on the 2003 national championship team) was from nearby Scranton.

I am a PSU alum in the Philly area, too, but, I came up on Big 5 basketball first. The sort of gatekeeper I am, I believe that if Penn State is playing in the Palestra, it should be with one of the Philly schools (starting with Penn). Given how the program cut down on some of the area school non-conference bouts, I don't know...it just irks me to showcase in Philly but not play the actual schools here (and I don't care if PSU has a campus in the Navy Yard now).

Personally, that part of Philly (or Philly in general these days), it's not unlike Hershey (or Allentown, for that matter) in that, if you can get there, it's fine. The journey's the issue. The old Hershey Arena used to host PSU and Pitt games. PPL Center...dreamland is over after you leave the building. Both areas have better casual PSU fans.
Big 12: https://big12sports.com/news/2023/9/25/b...slate.aspx

I don't usually like to highlight the Big 12 but it is significant to me this year because it is the last year Texas and Oklahoma are in and the first year for the newcomers. In terms of men's basketball, the big news is Houston who made the 2021 Final Four out of the AAC and has a chance to play the big boys. With a 14 team conference in 2023, not everyone will play twice but Houston will play both Texas and Kansas twice (Kansas at Houston is the regular season finale for both).
when do they start announcing networks for games? I'm curious about the Big 10 schedule especially since they moved off ESPN will weeknight games be heavy BTN, FS1?
Does Chicago State have a full schedule or will we have to wait for teams finding a space to squeeze them in once the conference schedules are announced?

Not to mention PSU could be playing in Reading or anywhere else with a branch campus, not at the Palestra.

Yeah. Reading, Scranton, Erie...and, honestly, given the presence out that way...Pittsburgh area.

You'd never see them play actually at one of their branch campuses, though. Even the ones they've turned into four-year residential sites. High schools have better facilities.

Let’s see: PSU could play a game in a historic venue in the city that has its largest alumni base and is the #4 TV market… or it could play in some small tertiary market. That makes no sense. It’s like telling to Illinois to play a game in Springfield instead of Chicago or Michigan State playing a game in Grand Rapids instead of Detroit.

The flagships *should* be pressing every alumni advantage that they have in the largest markets in their respective states. Frankly, PSU should be doing it even more in Philly. Illinois never played local Chicago schools when they had games at the United Center, either - it was about bringing in higher profile national opponents. This isn’t a charity to prop up local schools - it’s about flagships neutralizing their location disadvantage and instead leveraging their alumni size advantage.

It seems like a lot of East Coast people get hung up on whether a school is actually located in a market or how far away it is distance-wise, when the reality is that in the rest of the country, a flagship or flagship-equivalent located 2/3/4 hours away delivers the largest markets in that state better than the schools actually located in those markets. This is what PSU should be doing even more than it is now.
Alabama has played “home” games in Birmingham, Huntsville, and Mobile in recent years. Makes sense to spread your brand across the state to make alumni in that area happy. With school out in late December you might as well leave town.
