Miami came out hot and never looked back on their way to a relatively impressive road win at UMass this past week.

I don't want to see anymore chatter about Oklahoma on twitter or this board until the Cats take care of business Saturday night.

Let's hope Coach Satt is taking this rivalry game as seriously as Fickell seemed to take it. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little nervous- I've heard through the grapevine that some folks up in Oxford think this is their best chance to reclaim the bell in quite a while. I'm particularly thankful this game is under the lights at Nippert this year.

Oh, I think your cautious approach is prudent. For our guys who have been in the program for several years, it has to be a letdown game coming off a quality win over ACC Pitt. For the newcomers, it's a MAC team. And the MAC's profile is lower than ever these days.

Pitt's QB had accuracy problems Saturday night--maybe that's just who he is. Miami has had a pretty impressive passing game in most recent years. I say UC will continue to be solid on offense in Nippert; Miami's "Super Bowl game" will see them scoring more than we expect. In the absence of stupid penalties or multiple turnovers, I'll take UC winning 38-28. It might lack style points, but @ 3-0 entering conference play, it shouldn't matter.

i think if you look up the definition of trap game, it would show the portion of our schedule that has miami preceding a potential big noon kickoff match up against OK and their punkass QB.

Wasn't that a 3 point game in the 4th quarter?
I don't hold a road win at UMass in as high regard as some.

UC didn't take EKU lightly. They'll be ready to stomp Izod U.

Love it...although looking at their latest admission rate, I'd go with JCrew Factory U.

Or JCrew Factory OUTLET U.
Well, let’s get this over with. Definitely our best shot at winning this Saturday since the timeout debacle in 2017, but Martin is who he is. I won’t believe he wins any game against a decent OOC team until I see it. Hope I’m wrong but hey it’s where we are.

You're not wrong.

That confused me too
It confuses me why Miami and most of the MAC are still in the FBS division.

I think you guys are confusing "best" shot with "having" a shot. I get where he's coming from. Last few years we were rolling under Fick. We are in a transition year, with new players, coaches, league, etc. before things really start rolling again. Miami voted pre-season as one of the top 3 teams in the MAC (with a few 1st place votes). So, in a sense, it probably is their "best'" shot.

Granted it’s relative (being 2 out of 10 on the optimism scale is low, but it’s still higher than 1). But since we blew it in 2017 we had 18 (monsoon conditions), 19/21 (your teams were out of reach for us to have any real chance), and 22 (Gabbert injured). Now Gabbert is back at QB and we have the nation’s leading receiver in Gage Larvadain, the D looks solid (held their own against the U until they were worn out by being on the field all game), and Fickell is gone.

At the end of the day it’s a night game at Nippert and this is Martin. Even if there’s some meek optimism it’s not a real expectation of us winning on this Saturday or any Victory Bell game with him as coach. If we somehow pull it off then I’ll be over the moon of course, but I won’t believe it until I see it.

Fair enough. I forgot about the Gabbert injury last season. I think 2018 the teams were much closer in quality than any year since (A similar strength OU team took UC to the final minute) and I think the Monsoon wasn't exactly great for UC either. I like this year's UC team more than last year and the game last year wasn't at Nippert, but with the Gabbert injury you're probably right that this year is a slightly better chance than last year... (Though I keep thinking this is a better UC team, and it's a night game at Nippert).

As institutions, the MAC looks a lot more like an FBS conference than the Sun Belt or Conference USA.

And while the MAC isn't as good at football, top-to-bottom their athletic departments are similar to C-USA and superior to the Sun Belt.

Institutionally the MAC schools are hurting. Ohio, Akron and NIU have ~50% of the enrollment they had a decade ago. They have had to cut a lot of programs. Toledo and BGSU have had issues in this area but not to the same extent.

The MAC may be better better overall athletically because of women’s sports, men’s soccer, etc; but I think they are about to be lapped by the SBC and CUSA given the growth in those schools and regions as a whole.

The MAC schools, with the exception of Buffalo, look more like Grand Valleys, Wayne States, Wright States, and Daytons of the world than FBS schools at this point. I've long been a proponent of them moving down, because they have LOST the money game, they're not even playing at this point, outside of each school who is already cash strapped pumping $15m-$25m that they don't have into their ADs.

Bolded, those are good points and until UC's defensive backs adjust and start looking for the ball, that kind of potent combination of QB and WR could be worrisome. Pitt's QB had some awful passing attempts last Saturday that a better QB or WR would have completed.

Alternately, the environment last year in the afternoon downtown compared with a sold out Nip' at Night is totally different for the visitors. I still like UC in this one but believe it will be a closer, more competitive game than some imagine.
