I'd missed this latest instance of a naming rights disgrace. Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field was one of the best venue names in all of sports. Was there any uproar or blowback from the fan base?
Hyundai Field may not be historic, but it is lucrative.

If you're mad over stadium names I don't know how you've made it this far. There isn't anything sacred left and hasn't been for years now.

The GTAA retains the right to reference BDS@HGF and put a historical site on the stadium grounds relating to Grant Field.

You might have got an uproar 20 years ago. Today you'll get much more of an uproar about the pay disparity between the ACC and SEC/B1G. Which this helps address.

100% agree with this, although it's easy for me to say since I don't have the emotional attachment to the previous name.

I'm glad to see Ga Tech doing what they can to fund their athletic programs.

A rising tide lifts all ships. And Georgia Tech could be a goliath.

Heck, at least Hyundai is a legit national consumer brand.

My MLB team (the White Sox) has a stadium deal with Guaranteed Rate… complete with a logo with an arrow pointing down (which is appropriate for the state of our franchise). There are bunch of stadium deals with crypto exchanges that either never got off the ground or are in constant threat of default. We should just assume that any of our teams will take a naming deal for the right price, so you use hope that it’s a stable unembarrassing sponsor. A global car company is actually on the top of the pecking order on that front.

I agree. The uproar would be if GT was foregoing valuable income by refusing to name the field.

Just a few years ago there was an uproar over renaming the LA Coliseum and it ended up with a compromise. United Airlines Field at the LA Memorial Coliseum.

Yes I know it's the way of the world at this point. Even still, it seems cheap and minor league in the world of big time college football, particularly since it's erasing an existing name. I don't think you'll see Bryant-Denny, Michigan Stadium, Ohio Stadium or most major programs doing this.
Eh, wouldn't worry too much, Memphis' stadium is called Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, we still call it the Liberty Bowl, I suspect we always will. If the old name is entrenched, fans are going to call it what they've always called it.

I'm sure A&M could squeeze a few dozen million to make your place Kyle Field at Hyundai Stadium. Is John Sharp failing in his fiduciary duty because he's leaving that money on the table?

Joe, I wonder if this will feel very odd to Hyundai every week when a Model A Ford Coupe is driven out onto the field to start the game? Coolest car in college football and captures the spirit of college perfectly! I find this arrangement awkward.

ESPN/FOX deposits $20-40 million dollars more a year at Bryant-Denny, Michigan Stadium, and Ohio Stadium. $2-3m/yr for a stadium name doesn't make sense when you already out earn everybody. For everybody NOT in the SEC and B1G ... this is part of how you play catch up. If Alabama had the ACC media rights deal and Auburn had the SEC media rights deal ... there'd be a name on Bryant-Denny so fast it would make your head spin.

Clemson and FSU are in the same boat, and I don't foresee either of them doing this.

I realize I'm an old man yelling at clouds, but these are cathedrals. I don't particularly care if a new major league arena or stadium (which typically last about 20-25 years at this point) gets a new corporate name to replace the old corporate name. That didn't happen here. 110 years of history was just sold off.

It's a matter of how much clout a department has to turn away these offers. Notre Dame Stadium not only has no corporate sponsorship, it doesn't allow advertising anywhere inside the stadium, not even the concession stands (at least pre-COVID when I visited there).

Which leads to the inevitable question: for how much would a school change its mascot or even its name for money?
When did they start giving fields names that are separate and distinct from the stadium name? I find it to be so cringeworthy.

Florida State may find naming rights important for paying their private equity firm after incurring a hefty 9 figure GoR / leave the ACC penalty.

Clemson's current AD, Graham Neff, GT alum, is too quiet and coy to really place anywhere on any policy. But I can see them putting a name on Memorial Stadium. The fans will still call it Death Valley anyway, just like we're still going to call it BDS.

Hardee's/Carl's Jr. Institute of Technology in Georgia has a ring to it.

Not sure if it's the first but the first I remember was Nebraska naming their field after Tom Osborne because they weren't going to change the name of the stadium which is a war memorial.

How much money?
Which school?

Keep in mind when you talk the academic side of the house you're talking several standard deviations larger financial footprint.

A few million a year isn't going to move a university with a billion+ dollar endowment. Now somebody like Presbyterian College or Gardner-Webb ....

Well Texas had Joe Jamail and his family give money and tell us how to name it. That works too.

...um... I'm pretty sure Pat Dye Field is within Jordan-Hare Stadium... ...from a fellow Aubie... 04-cheers
