A common refrain from Sun Belt Media Days was that the Sun Belt is the best football conference in the Group of Five. Hard to argue against it.

My only thing about calling us the best G5 conference is we have yet to prove it by getting a deep NCAA run or NY6 bowl...

Sad but true. We need to stake our claim now while the AAC is still on its heels. Basketball will be a tougher one to claim with the MWC still together and as long as the AAC has Memphis. (and oddly enough FAU will be very good this year too).

Since almost every coach made a statement similar to this, I would have like to see each coach with a Coaches Poll vote indicate how many SBC teams they would be voting for in the preseason Top 25 poll.

I'd like to see a number of SBC teams getting votes. Deserved preseason votes.

Those are both individual team accomplishments and not conference accomplishments. Is the 2007 WAC better the Sun Belt now because Boise had a BCS Bowl win? No one would argue that.

Hypothetical Question: Is there any school in the league now that if they were to get an invite to the AAC they'd take it? Texas State's administration might take the invite but their fans don't seem interested, and Georgia State's administration doesn't seem interested but their fans might want it. Every other school both fans and administration wouldn't be interested.

Any one of the four teams with P5 wins would've had a legit shot at a NY6 bowl with the conference title. Marshal and App with certainty.

Going undefeated without the P5 win may be a bit of a stretch unless you're pushed by another with a solid P5 win who threatens for the top spot at the end of the season. Unfortunately that didn't happen in 2022.

Any one of the four would have made the grade. Particularly App and Marshall if only the wheels hadn't fallen off to finish the season.

A lot needs to playout but it's clearly doable and likely to happen soon enough.

Those odds are solid.

Yup.

And if you remember it used to be the talking point of people like Always Sunny that we've never had a ranked team before and we wouldn't get one unless every other G5 league fell on their face. I'm betting we've had more cumulative weeks with a team ranked the past 5 seasons than any of the present-day G5 leagues.

Eh, a MWC without SDSU and UNLV sounds more appealing than an AAC without UH, Cinci, UCF and SMU. With just name brands like Memphis and ECU left Boise, Fresno, CSU and AFA has a better ring to it. USU, Nevada and Wyo aren't bad names either. San Jose, UNM and Hawaii aren't anything to get excited about but would be better affiliates than Charlotte, Rice, Temple, UAB, Tulsa

I feel there's a geographical bias, the east teams would stick to the AAC rather than flying out to MWC every week, vs the West teams wanting to go MWC vs flying to Philly or Tampa...

And in the end, the AAC still got the nod for the game that mattered the most so, congrats on rankings but it matters at the end of the season.

Those are fair points. I just think the NY6 win and a deep NCAA run would help solidify our place.

Also can’t have GAST losing to CLT either.

At some point? Like, ever? Even once?

Troy finished the 2022 season ranked. Coastal finished ranked the year before, just outside the top 10. Heck, even JMU was ranked #25 last year (for a week) in their first FBS season.

The SBC is indeed rising. Lots of good coaches and teams.

That's awful ******* hard to do when the rankings are as subjective as they are. USM beat Tulane, and it wasn't all that close from what I could tell, yet the Sun Belt was consistently rated lower than many other AAC schools, why? Sure, Tulane beat USC, but based purely on the seasons performance did Tulane really prove themselves to be better than say, Troy? No, they didn't. Troy's two losses were to App State and Ole Miss.

And if we are being honest, 2019 App State had the best case yet for NY6 for the Sun Belt. Nevermind App is 2-3 in their last 5 against AP Top 10 teams and has only lost three times by more than one score to P5 opponents, with three wins, since 2015. Two of those losses came to teams who ended up in the National Championship Game.

I don't know what it's going to take but the AAC is overvalued by both the AP and the Selection Committee. Perhaps that changes with their losses this year.

GaSt would bolt in a heartbeat. Demographically they fit the AAC.
