The #3 - #6 seeds were virtually tied. No real upset here. The shock is that Charlotte's stud pitcher (assuming he started Game 1) got bombed.

Wyatt Hudepohl, a junior transfer from Kentucky, started for Charlotte and pitched 3 innings, giving up 7 runs (all earned) on 7 hits ... 4 of them home runs! ... and a walk. He threw 77 pitches, struck out 4 and had a wild pitch.

Coming into today's game, Hudepohl had a 5-6 record with a 3.97 ERA. He was 1st team All-CUSA, though, so he's the stud?

Yes. In fairness, Parker Smith has only a 2-2 record.
#7 seed Middle Tennessee beat #2 seed UTSA, 5-1.

...I just don't understand the benching over the past 2+ weeks of Smiggy, especially against a RHP.

The DBU starter, Ryan Johnson, has better across the board stats than Parker Smith, with the lone exception being ERA. Only 20 BBs vs. 105 Ks over 76.1 IP. Yet I'm willing to bet most of our hitter will continue to take the first strike.
Rice gets back-to-back two-out singles by Walsh (infield) Garza (ground ball), but don't score. Heading to B1. The first 5 guys in DBU's batting order are hitting over .300. Their leadoff man has 10 HRs and 22 stolen bases.

Parker has been roughed up in the couple innings in each of his last two outings.
8-pitch walk, bunt single (fielded by Smith but no one covering 1B), RBI single, with a second run scoring on E-9 (Dukes throwing error), RBI single.

3-0 and there still no outs. 03-banghead

Their catcher is hitting .335 with 19 HRs, 16 doubles, 60 RBIs

A strikeout, caught stealing and ground out puts an end to another rough start by Parker.
Little League like defensive start for the Owls.
The DBU pitcher works about as fast as any I’ve seen.

Yes, I remember that from our series with them a month ago. If I recall, we knocked him out in the 4th or 5th inning. Another blown sizable lead.
Dukes with successful bunt
Rice has guys on 2B (Dukes bunt) and 3B (Garibay walk), with one out, thanks to a passed ball. We get one back with a Holderbach RBI ground out. Dukes on 3B, two outs for Johnson, who grounds out.

1-3 heading to B2.
Parker really having a hard time putting away DBU hitters. Gets 2 quick outs, then the #9 hitter fouls off 3 1-2 pitches before doubling, and he walks the leadoff man again after he fouls off 3 pitches. However, he then escapes with a fly out, but already up to 40 pitches.

I'm out for awhile.
2-3 going to B3 on a Walsh solo HR.
Walsh takes a breaking ball ... then pokes the next one over the LF fence,

Then not much.

2-3 ... heading to B3.

(I thought someone would start a separate thread for the Rice games. But since that's not the case, I'll edit the thread title to remove the "other teams ... " )
Smith getting shelled. 6-2 DBU, 3rd inning not even over.
3-6 to top of 4th.
