There is one rule in baseball that can never be broken, but some still can't comprehend it.

Crimson Tide head baseball coach fired after getting caught betting on Tide baseball games.
I guess Dana never bet on Tiger games. I would have remembered that. But, I do remember 2 things about Dana --
1 On his coaches show , he would predict winners of upcoming College basketball games ( not Tiger games). It was crazy how good he was at predicting this.
2 It was known that he would play Cards with donors and/or friends. Sometimes, these games would be big stakes.

Dana Kirk never got another real basketball job after being Fired from Memphis. If he has not been involved with point shaving he could have gotten a job at a lesser school that takes rehab projects and worked his way back up.

Ole Miss, Texas Tech etc

It was widely known that he point shaved, this is why he never got another job - his coaching resume was good — his gambling resume killed his career
Funny how the sportsbook the bet was placed was at GREAT AMERICAN BALLPARK

How ironic and hypocritical

They never brought forth any evidence of point shaving during his trial. You’re reaching.
The reason he never got another job was because it was found out he had lied on his resume and then of course the trial he went through.
He made some powerful enemies.

Don’t argue with Ned he’s smarter than us and a better fan
Personally idgaf if someone is betting on their own team to win… now betting to lose is a different story.

I do. Look at the NBA. The coach will often rest key players in favor of the ultimate goal. His job is to win a championship, not a single game. When there’s money involved on a single game, they’ll throw caution to the wind. Bring players back from injury to soon, have exhausted players prior to a key series, etc. You’d start questioning every move they make.

Same with baseball. Risk injury to the franchise pitcher by overusing him. Same with closers.

Lots of stuff at stake here.
Dana Kirk was convicted of tax evasion and obstruction of justice, and did four months in the federal pen. I doubt any college in th US back in the 80s would have hired a coach after that.

Unless they have a really bad problem they make too much money to throw games

But yeah a college baseball coach I could definitely see doing it

I’d be more concerned about the officials. I guarantee Donahey wasn’t the only one

I agree about throwing games. Not worth the risks. I'm really speaking to oft repeated idea that it's no big deal if a coach is betting on his team to WIN. There are a number of negative consequences that could result from that.

Bartow was a better coach and Dana was more ethically challenged (convicted felon).

WHO? Didn’t Bartow leave us for Illinois ?

Dana lived her the rest of his life. He loved Memphis. As for him not paying his taxes, taxes are theft. I don’t have a problem with him charging some rich kids for cokes. 80s version of shoe money

Yes, after Spook kicked him in the nuts with an idiotic $1000 raise (or something like that) after taking the basketball team to the NC game against UCLA. He was worth more and he knew it, but in the AD's football-foremost brain, it wasn't a big deal....

Same AD that never got us in a football league? But he’s a hall of famer. It really is funny how some are hated and some are loved when they all are flawed

I have talked to people directly involved with this matter , the chances that I am wrong are very very slim.

You can believe what you want to it does not matter to me.
