Why Georgia Southern fans don't talk about Paul Johnson? Overall thoughts on PJ?

He's been nominated for the CFB HoF and should be inducted. He's been OC or head coach for 4 of our 6 national championships. It's not just about the W/L record, though.

Little known fact, when Urban Meyer arrived at Utah in 2003 he asked Paul Johnson how he ran his running offense and Meyer didn't want him to tell anyone he was consulting him because of the stigma around running option offenses at the DI level. Another time when GS wanted to schedule a game with LSU (where Nick Saban was at the time) then-defensive coordinator Will Muschamp showed him a few plays of Paul Johnson's office and he turned the tape off and told Muschamp "yeah, we're not playing these guys" and vetoed that idea right there. Johnson was ahead of his time and was using concepts like optionality, mobile QBs, and a simplified playbook before those concepts were everywhere.

All that said, our AD supposedly reached out first to him about being the head coach instead of Clay Helton and I'm glad he didn't accept the job. The new blocking rules have neutered that offense, and if he had taken the job with the new transfer rules we would've had an exodus of players to the portal.

I’ve been advocating for a PJ statue in Paulson for a few years now.

I think you'd have an easy time getting a ton of favorable opinions on PJ if you ask a Southern fan directly.

He doesn't get brought up as much when talking about present success or failure because we've totally shifted away from his offense and there are no more links to his coaching staff. It could also be that he has fewer die-hard fans because he's not exactly a ray of sunshine if he's not interested in whatever you're talking about.

PJ is like Mike Leach's bizzaro-world twin. He'll run it 70 times per game, he's full of more actual knowledge than theories/anecdotes, and you're never going to catch him having meaningful conversations with random bargoers.

Not sure that anyone doesn't talk about him, he's just not brought up a lot unless you're talking about our history. Whenever anyone talks about our previous greats, he is always very highly thought of and talked about. He should be a no brainer for the HoF and the only reason that he's not considered the best coach in our history is that we also have Erk Russell. PJ doesn't like the media and really has just disappeared (by his own choice) from the football landscape when he retired. He has been back to GS a couple times over the years for different events and for honoring certain National Championship teams. He's an absolute GS Great and I don't know anyone that would have a bad word to say about him.

Because he has a bachelors from Western Carolina and a masters from App State.

Interesting tidbit... PJ grew up in my home town of Newland, NC. His dad was my little league baseball coach. He graduated from high school in the same class as my brother. Additionally, while working on Masters at App, he student taught social studies at my high school and was an offensive assistant on my varsity football team. Paul is good people.

Georgia Southern is Kennesaw's older brother in a superior conference. Glad you're showing some proper respect.

KSU football coach came from PJ. It does not matter what I am a fan of to recognize a legendary coach.

You've derailed your own thread lol, congrats. I said that they have had some success. Definitely more FBS success than KSU has had.
