A great hire, Tulane hires Troys DC Shiel Wood. Wood led Troy defense to some amazing stats including #8 in the country for ppg game and #18 for ypg. We’ll see if another P5 try’s to steal him and we pocket another quick $500k.

The AAC is still a better option for coaches than the SBC. Higher level of competition, a stranglehold on the NY6 bowl, more $, etc. The AAC isn't a permanent spot for any coach, of course... obviously the AAC is a stepping stone to a higher-level P5 job. But we're the tallest midget, for sure.

Your school was the gold standard that Memphis and a lot of other schools tried to follow back in the day...and I hate that we got separated. Your school never deserved that...it belongs with the AAC.

Strongly disagree. Where’s the market? Where’s the academics? Where’s the history of winning games? They don’t exist. The AAC is about sizzling markets and top notch academics as well as all teams with a tradition of winning. That’s just not who Southern Miss is. So glad we left them in the dust years ago. But clearly when Tulane is poaching coordinators from the Sunbelt it clearly shows the power is all in the AAC and especially at Tulane. It’s Tulane then everybody else.

Not sure the rest is true, but I agree with the more $. AAC schools have more money than SBC schools. I think he left for the same reason most coaches take another job elsewhere. ($$$)
We just lost our coach to a school moving to CUSA. Not sure that had anything to do with a higher level of competition. Likely more of the opposite. A P5 salary to play in CUSA...sounds like a steal.
I doubt the AAC vs Sunbelt issue played a role in Tulane hiring Sun Belt coordinators. It’s likely three things: 1) Money (this is somewhat influenced by conference payouts, but it’s also because Tulane just has more money and is currently prioritizing assistant salaries); and Willie Fritz (he just won a few coach of the year honors and is renowned in the industry for his culture); and 3) Tulane’s assistants in recent years have been upwardly mobile to head jobs and P5 coordinator jobs.
I tried to explain to some Sun Belt fans that the financial advantages of the AAC basically reduces the Belt to a farm league, but they just don't want to see it. This Tulane hire is just the latest example of the AAC's ability to poach from the Belt.

I'm sure many Memphis fans feel that way...how could they not...we've been though so many great battles on the field and court. I hope Memphis takes the Tulane route and at least schedules some home and homes. I miss Memphis and ECU most of all. I disagree on us belonging in the AAC...square peg and round hole...USM has it's place in the Fun Belt.
The Battle for the Bell is the only actual rivalry game that we have left. I understand the need for Tulane to continue to elevate itself, but I want the USM series to be annual in all sports. There is no reason NOT to play them. Just drop one of our worthless non-conference games (we schedule so many of them) and make it happen.
