I think so. Rose in the NCAA Tournament took over, but he didn't put up the numbers like we are seeing from KD as far as the regular season goes. Elliot Perry was close in points but didn't have these assist numbers. Other former Tiger PG's that come to mind are Turner, Garner, Burks, Washington, Evans and Jackson, but none of them put up this sort of performance over a season.

KD (22' - 23')
22 PTS
6 AST
4 REB

Over his last 8 games:
25 PTS
6 AST
4 REB

Eye popping numbers. He is 8th in the country (2nd as far as major programs) in scoring while averaging a healthy 6 assists per game.

I think this is the best performance of a Memphis PG outside of Penny in the regular season. Thoughts?
I never really considered Penny a point guard when he was in college. Just a player.

That's because he was all over the court doing everything, but he primarily played PG.
Penny was the most versatile player ever to wear a Tiger uniform.

KD is definitely up there with Larry Finch and Elliot Perry in terms of being a high-scoring PG threat.

I always considered Finch more of a combo guard that's why I didn't list him. If we say he was a true PG than yes it's Finch and Penny at the top then followed by KD imo

So what was Tony Madlock ? The 3 man ?

I get what you're saying, but Penny will forever be known as a PG.

I would say that only Penny and Rose were probably better. Maybe EP, maybe Tyreke were close to or at the same level.

Penny was not an actual point guard until the NBA. He was a shooting guard at Treadwell. He was small forward his first year at Memphis. He was small forward the first half of his second year until Sidney Coles got hurt. So he did play some point the second half of his second year.
I saw Larry Finch play as a Frosh and then 3 years Varsity. #1 in my book for the time period around 70-73.
When one of the Bill's were playing point, he played wing but often brought the ball down court anyway, especially against the press. Incredible ball handler, scorer.

Penny #1 for his time period.

DRose and KD, second to these two.
Bill Laurie is the greatest point guard in Tiger history for obvious reasons

You mean Nancy Walton Laurie.

No
I agree. KD is the man. But Jeremiah Martin deserves to be in the conversation due to his final season.

No argument there

I know you are referring to Joe, but Otis was pretty danged good PG in his day.
Are you forgetting Derrick Rose & Tyreke Evans?

I think most Memphis PG’s have had more around them than KD. He’s very talented & has the heart of a lion, but its hard to say if he’s better than guys like Jackson, Garner, Andre or Otis Jackson because those guys weren’t asked to do everything KD is asked.

I'm of the opinion that if Davis had better support, the only change would be much higher margins of victory.
KD is the all-time leader in head fakes for sure. Jeremiah Martin was the king of and-ones but KD is pretty close.
These are always interesting conversations but also really tough to judge. What can definitely be said is we are getting to witness one of the all time great seasons by a Memphis PG.

I personally think he will likely go on to be a good pro player as well due to his ability to make shots, change speeds and pass at a high level.
