Plethora of Injuries.....Abundance of Opportunities....
Firstly, Let's give these wonderfully articulate young men a round of applause. I absolutely love hearing them express their love of the game; Penny; Memphis and TIGERNATION so eloquently
Here, I will briefly highlight 5 of the players in this short rotation due to injuries and what to look for in this intense/critical stretch of conference play....Penny eluded to what he was diagnosing through recent film study and applying focus and attention into a "Next man up" mentality and the impetus o go 1 and 0:
Keonte Kennedy: KK is a VERY intriguing player, as he has length coupled with athleticism, this gives him a "hybrid" label, as he fits many positions....What's going to be interesting to watch, is how KK can adopt/adapt his play to being even "more" responsible with the mass of injuries that we have encountered....Keonte will have the opportunity to assume "more" ball-handling duties, as CPH's first point of emphasis to EVERYONE, is to rebound....KK should be excited to take on this challenge (to rebound) as this will give us "more" opportunities to run, while simultaneously, give KD more off-ball changes so the defense doesn't "load-up" on him causing Memphis to burn shot-clock and take more contested shots....
One of the caveats that I am noticing re; Keonte.....He seems to get better rhythm in his shots from the "bounce" or "off-the-dribble" as opposed to a "catch-n-shoot" type. Grabbing boards and starting the break by Keonte can give this team a much needed dimension from this perspective, as Keonte is capable of the pull-up (off the bounce) as well as , finish strongly at the rim...(defenses cannot load-up) on KD
Kao: Kao is an incredible talent....His enthusiasm is infectious, very similar to Joey Dorsey, which it's very compelling that Joey is working with him....As Kao mentioned in the clip, In the weight room, He is one of the strongest on the team, So why doesn't he rebound more? As he eluded to and is diligently working with Joey, it's ALL about leverage....Kao is just standing too tall/ too straight-up and is not bending his knees and engaging his hips/thighs/butt (NOT necessarily in hat order) to gain leverage/position against his opponent.....Who better to learn this technique from that the BEST
Damaria: Really interesting scenario here as well...."Mars", after being on the fence of "eligibility", was forced into the fire of a talented BAMA team....Mars want's to WIN every possession, which is an extremely rare trait in an athlete....He's pressing and CPH realizes and understands, He wants Mars to relax in his play and allow the game to develop around him.....It's rather understandable also rather unfortunate being in Mars' shoes, as he know the impact that he could have....I feel that if Mars applies himself to his "intensive" defensive traits/desires and rebounding, this team will crescendo, as he will be a critical component moving forward.....Esp v COOGS..WE NEED YA MARS
Elijah: Nothing much to be said re; "Eli", as Penny stated, "Elijah has come to realize that he absolutely belongs and can play at this level"....Eli just needs to do more of what he currently brings to the table... His instincts and efficiencies are becoming apparent.....I'm ready to see him get out on a break and try to rip the rim off.....If Eli can manage to grabs double digit rebounds, we are in for a treat
Jonathon Lawson: Last but certainly NOT least is "J Law"....There is some intrigue here as well, as in the absence of Jayden, J Law has begun to emerge/insert himself into the role of "hybrid" guard and occasional "ball-handler"....Seeing him "confidently" bring the ball up v Temple was a moment....He is becoming confident/capable for Penny to "trust" in more situations, which is entirely exciting to see the FUTURE of TIGER basketball being developed now....I absolutely love seeing L-Law create on the baseline opening up lanes for players to slash/cut to the middle of the floor.....His uncanny ability to find players (making these dimes) is very reminiscent.....As J Law continues to gain confidence as well as get stronger with his frame and ball-handling, I sincerely feel that we are in for a treat.....
Just my 2 cents GtG
