... but the thing was, the teams that were gunning for them were armed with pop-guns. The schedule as atrocious.

You can't lose to your rival and call it a better season.

Losing to a 7-6 Southern Miss will always be a blackeye on the 2022 season.

I expect 2022 Tulane's final rankings to be Top10 but not higher than the #7 ranking the 2018 team received.

Undefeated season just mean more

I suppose I could say that though I got to wine and dine 12 lovely ladies in 2023 — with all of them enthralled by my tales of ribaldry and impressed with my unconventional yet effective work in the Dazzle love room — but two rejected me ... a "black eye" (to an extent) for the year. Yet a "black eye" I could easily live with.

1998 Tulane
12-0
Final Ranking AP/Coaches #7
Liberty Bowl Champion defeating BYU
C-USA Champion
Number of weeks in the Top25: 9
Defeated Rival Southern Miss

or

2022 Tulane
12-2
Current Ranking AP # 14 / Coaches #17
NY6 Cotton Bowl Champion defeating #8 USC
AAC Champion
Number of weeks in the Top25: 7
Lost to Rival Southern Miss

BYU was only 9-5 and unranked in 1998. Moreover, Tulane didn't beat any ranked teams in 1998. They beat two in 2022.
More impressive wins- 2022
Impressive to not lose - 1998
Who'd win on the field? 2022, 1998 did a LOT with early RichRod/Tommy Bowden spread and zone read innovations that are normal now. Fritz has seen it plenty and would shut it down.

IMO, going 12-2 with wins over the Big 12 champ and USC in the Cotton Bowl is easily more important than losing to USM. I mean, it's not like USM - Tulane is the same thing as Ohio State - Michigan or Army - Navy. They've played just 34 times, just doesn't resonate much to me as a big deal.

And to me, "undefeated" means nothing absent a look at who was beaten. Any given team could go 12-0 or 0-12 depending on who they are playing.

In 1998, Tulane didn't play anybody.
