A careless comment in a politically charged world.
conservative viewpoint discrimination ...

IT’S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD
Cancelled for telling the truth, it is a mad mad mad mad world.
I heard it while traveling in eastern NC and nearly ran off the road into Jordan Lake.

It's a political opinion wrapped in a thin tissue of fact.

It was really bad taste and it was unnecessary. Raleigh does not need to be taking shots at El Paso for no reason or reasons that do not advance NC State's interests.

If you hear it, and know the broadcaster and know his support crew, you would know that nothing was done in the immediate aftermath to clean it up, to explain that a Pitt/UCLA pre game activity was scrapped because the area was needed for temporary shelter housing, etc., etc.

It's no different than it would be if you were going along listening to Woody or Wes call a game for UNC or GT and suddenly they blurt out the N word for no compelling reason.

When you tell an off color joke or give such a remark and you are the straight man on the radio, you have to telegraph or clean it up before or after. Hahn did neither.

The fact that South and Central America are so screwed up that people risk death to get to the US in order to work low paying jobs is an issue to show compassion and respect about. As near I can tell, it's the graduate students at Washington State U that are doing most of the killing lately.

State will be best off if he never calls another NC State game.

It's not as bad as the UNC-Ch J-School attempting to give tenure to a polarizing figure who road the coattails of a weak historic treatise into notoriety. Only to then cause the ptb at the NC General Assembly, NC BOG, and UNC BOT to get involved and then give everyone involved a black eye.

Some things don't need to be said in the newspaper, on the radio, or on television. If you have to explain your joke before and after you tell it, you should not tell it.
It was a tone deaf insult style joke at the expense of the city hosting an ACC affiliated bowl.

I think insulting an ACC Bowl Partner is the bigger reason for the suspension than using the "illegal aliens" terminology.

Another unnecessary NC State Miscue this weekend, at least the others were done by students trying to do better. No excuse for an experienced sportscaster.
He either intended to inject a particular political point of view with his comment, or he was, like me sometimes, a kind of clueless Boomer using a phrase he had heard often and didn't realize carried political baggage or he was a clueless Boomer that had no idea that anything more that a miniscule number of outliers held any point of view different than his own. Hard to tell.

Well people have always suffered consequences for hurting the company brand. I'm not sure this would fall under the "canceling" heading. Properly worded he might well have been in bounds for sighting the problems with migration / border crossings etc. in the El Paso area but why would you? Using a little perspective it's hard not to recognize that the specific term he used is politically charged, conveying a specific perspective. I'm just sayin'
Unnecessary to add to the broadcast. Even more unnecessary to suspend.

Public flogging would've gotten much better tv ratings but it's not "P.C." enough.

Capitalism at play. He brought unwanted negative attention to the brand. There's a price to pay. Who's to say issuing a well worded statement and a couple of weeks in time out doesn't bring him back? Or who's to say he doesn't decide that he's done this long enough and retirement looks better and better each day? A suspension isn't the end of the world.

This is complete nonsense. It was topical in nature because of the state of emergency going on there. I bet 90% of the people critical of his comment believe he was suggesting everyone in El Paso is an illegal immigrant while being unaware of the recent events there. That is a totally different angle which is a reminder that context is key.

Suggesting this is the same as the N word is asinine.

I find that a great many NC State fans are untrained in the ways of understanding the subtlety of anything. The understand rebar, they understand calculus, they understand animals, but they don't seem to understand the constructed political nature of the wider world. They think everything is in face value within a black and white world. Anyone defending Hahn just makes NC State look bad.
ARE there illegal aliens in El Paso? If so, then what's the problem?
(01-04-2023 01:04 PM)Bear Catlett Wrote: [ -> ]ARE there illegal aliens in El Paso? If so, then what's the problem?
I think actually El Paso has massive numbers of migrants crossing over and requesting asylum as persons fleeing danger in their country. So not really "illegal aliens" for the most part. If they were eluding authorities in an attempt remain in the country illegally they would be crossing and disappearing as best they can. They are instead trying to navigate the red tape.

Also he was reinstated today, so really it appears he got a slap on the wrist and is back on the job (if the report I saw was correct). I imagine he made some sort of apology and or pled ignorance.

We can now return to regular programing.

The US Government has laws in place to regulate immigration and quotas set up on each country of origin. These "asylum seekers" are circumventing established laws by entering the US and are indeed entering the country illegally. Hence they are by definition; illegal aliens.
It was a stupid comment on a radio broadcast for everyone to hear. This is Communication 101 stuff. It doesn’t matter if you agree or disagree with what he said. It’s completely out of place and unnecessary.

That can be argued but this isn't really the place to do it. The terminology has been politicized whether we like it or not so he Hahn made a mistake in making the reference and using that specific phrase when he did. I'd rather keep my sports and my politics viewing / listening separate and I think most people feel that way. He paid for his mistake, now it's time to move on.

He's in a time warp - this is his bio:

"Gary Hahn has been the radio voice of NC State football and basketball on the Wolfpack Sports Network since the 1990-91 season.

Before coming to NC State, Hahn worked on statewide radio sports networks for the University of Louisville, Ohio State University, and the University of Alabama. He was part of the broadcast team when Louisville won the NCAA Basketball Championship in 1980. He also called the 1985 Rose Bowl for the Ohio State Radio Network. In addition, Hahn described the 1986 NIT Championship that was won by the Buckeyes.

From 1981-83 Hahn was a sports anchor/reporter for the NBC Radio Network in New York City. He began his broadcasting career in 1970 while still a college student and also worked at WLWI-TV in Indianapolis in 1974-75.

Hahn also served as the radio play-by-play voice of the Carolina Cobras of the Arena Football League and the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks of the World League of American Football. He is a 1974 graduate of Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana, with a BS degree in Radio-TV."

When Hahn calls a game it is an exercise in the milquetoast, Midwest, vanilla, bland, mayonnaise on white bread pablum. That's part of the reason it was shocking. He's been unwilling to insult UNC or Duke for the last 30 years!

For the Duke game he was replaced by a good friend - Ernie Meyers who stepped in for Derrick Whittenburg back in 1983 after Whit broke his foot against UVa. What a breath of fresh air in the booth. I would have paid money to see Wes Durham's facial expression when he heard it.
NCSt needs to pay a penalty

To make amends they need to hire a Syracuse guy to do their radio play by play. Someone with a NYC accent.

We had a guy with a NYC accent but allowed him to be crucified.
