If they proactively enter the war in Ukraine then they don't get article 5 protection.

Yeah---the Russians and Belurians have something like 70-80K troops largely centered on the Ukrainian and Polish border. There is a possibility that they might try something to cut off the flow of NATO supplies to Ukraine. It makes sense, but I think the presence of 200K mobilized Polish troops and a 40K NATO quick response force all lurking near that border might be intended to lock those Russian and Belarusian troops in place. With a big threat like that lurking---they cant really just strip that border of all its forces and throw them into a second front at Kyiv.
