Why would he want that? He's already been OC at a P5. His next move should be HC at a P5 or higher G5.
Can’t say I blame him.

Going from P5 OC to MAC HC requires a pay cut, so why is it about the money now?

My best guess is his 5-year plan was to use the Kent job to springboard himself to a P5 job. Since that didn't happen, he's looking for another opportunity.

The Kent job isn't an easy one. Every year they play 3 games against P5 programs like OSU, Georgia, Clemson, Alabama meaning they have to go 6-3 in all other games just to make a bowl.
It's for that next job. He can't get to where he wants to go if he stays at Kent St longer. Guys on my board don't think highly of him, I do. He did a helluva job at a school that is tough to win at.

To get HC on his resume. He’s turned a dismal program in the right direction. He will go to an exciting P5 and double his pay, and in a short time will be cashing in on a P5 HC job.

His Flashes kicked Bowling Green's ass this year. I think he's a good coach.
Tim Lester to Kent State?

03-wink
Seems like he started good, turning Kent St to a consistent middle-of-the-pack / contender team. I thought he'd have a high cieling. But seems to have stagnated.

If recruiting class is good, I'd stay there. Getting hired away to be the head-coach of a higher-level G5 would be my goal. If recruiting class isn't good, bail.

Because he had enough of Kent's horrendous facilities?
MAC head coaches leaving to be assistants at terrible P5 schools is not a good look.

Did he feel like he was over his head as a head coach? Did he not believe in his ability to make KSU a consistent winner.

Guess we should have figured it out when Cephas decided to enter the portal.
Solid coach considering that Kent is a hard job, though the "Flash Fast" stuff seemed to lose some steam as time went on. Hope KSU doesn't immediately implode like when Hazell left.
Dan Enos of CMU tried this approach. Went to Arkansas as OC, bounced around, and was never heard from again.

A kid that already has offers from Miami, Oklahoma, .Notre Dame, Penn State, Pitt, West Virginia etc. wasn’t sticking around because of the Coach, he was gone anyway.
Well, darn, I thought that when the flurry of HC jobs passed through without loosing him that we were in good shape.

It's a easier to go bowling with a 1 P5 buy game away, 1 FCS buy game at home, and 2 Go5 H/H OOC than with 3 P5 buy games away and 1 FCS buy game at home.

Well, he’s currently Maryland’s OC and is most likely extraordinarily rich.

That’s still a better gig than CMU.

It’s pretty amazing how Enos keeps getting jobs. Since leaving CMU he as been with: Arkansas, Michigan, Alabama, Miami Fl, Cincinnati, and now Maryland.
Dix Stadium is terrible. High School Stadium.
