I’m beginning to feel like the guy in the Dr. Pepper commercial who doesn’t care enough. They will get a coach and some players and we will see what happens. I can’t stand the constant churning of players and coaches either but what can you do about. ESPN has spoken and now has hours more of gossip to talk about. Do any of you guys know where Odell Beckham is going???

Yup! A whole new thing for 24/7 sports news to talk about - who will and who won't enter the portal? What program gained the most this season from the portal, and which lost the most? I can even see synopses on the recruiting of high school players like "He's rated a 3-star recruit now, and is getting interest mostly from mid-majors, but he is felt to have high PORTAL POTENTIAL in a year or so, so P5 programs will keep a keen eye on his progress!"

Changes the dynamics of recruiting high school kids. Now you can pass on kids you don’t want to spend time developing as depth players their first year or two. They can go to a G5 and contribute fairly quickly then you come back and poach them to fill holes in that same timeframe. With no repercussions for transferring we have become like the JUCOs.

Good point. I never thought of that, but pretty much like JUCOs.
From Pete Thamel: Kent State is targeting Minnesota assistant head coach Kenni Burns to be the school's next head coach. A deal is expected to be finalized in the near future

I am mindful that the portal works both ways. Maryland has lost 13 to the portal already. There are around 1200 players in the portal now. I would guess that the majority of players in the portal are as good or better than what we lost. The right hire, and 10 good replacement players and just maybe we will be off to a good restart. Remember, at some point these portal hopefuls will be scampering for slots because their dream school did not come calling. We may have something to offer.

Good point.

I'm sticking by what I said before Buffalo, a good coach and decent players should win 6 games, even with out schedule. We should have had 6 wins this year.
Burns seems as good a choice as any at this point in time. It's interesting that his "specialty" is coaching running backs. I wonder if we should read anything into that.
Seems like mostly defensive players in the portal from Minnesota. Bummer. Wonder if any offensive guys jump to follow him.

Will be interesting to see what we do with assistants. Not often you have a successful coaching staff leave where the HC isn't taking most of his assistants with him. I'd love to see Sowder get the chance to stay.
How quickly can he start work? And, can we take care of our assistant coaches. I think we have some good ones.
I just hope he doesn’t like to row boats.

Agree. Our successful coaches who left, though, all left to become head coaches. So, they were free to make up their own staffs. The lone exception, of course, was Dennis Fitgerald who left to become an assistant at Syracuse.

Seriously? I’ll take the success WMU had during Fleck’s tenure.

Yeah, when he was there WMU went to the Cotton Bowl.

Sure, we’ll take the success, but I don’t think it was because of the cheesy slogans. It was recruiting and great coaching. That’s what you hope to get.

If I were a betting man, and I am, I would say that Fleck has that mode of transportation trademarked. Look for some BS like “keep it steady” or “find another gear” to be the new mantra.

Good news is that he coached running backs. Maybe he likes to Gap Down, Kick Out and Lead Through. All the while milking the clock and making the opposing OCs force a mistake.

A man can dream.
Just a joke: I am hearing Burns will be bringing Paul Haynes back with him
I realize the signing isn't official yet. But I'm curious how quickly that announcement will come and then how quickly the coaching staff will be announced. If this all wraps up quickly I'd be interested to see if we're able to coax any of our guys out of the portal. Walker and Cephas have gotten big offers so you can forget them. And of course Cooper is gone. Schlee is the interesting one. I haven't seen any news of offers and for a QB you're going to be looking for a place you're the clear cut starter. There's only 131 FBS starting QB jobs and ours is currently one of the ones that is wide open.

Also, something I was thinking about today. Losing Cooper is painful, but we've still got a a lot of talent at RB especially if Williams is going to try to play his final year. An RB room of Bradford, Williams, and Garcia could still be very formidable. Even if Williams isn't back, you'd like to find a third guy, but your wouldn't need to find a bellcow.

PS. I know, now that I said it, all three will hit the portal and Schlee will commit to Akron or something. Because that's just the way s#it works sometimes.

Thank you I hate slogans too. Just do the job.
Amazing. I got more responses to the row the boat post than most others.
