Think pickleball could get big enough to become a scholastic sport? I think it could work, but we’re probably looking at a 20 year timetable.

If Woman's bowling is, why not. I think the NAIA will be the first, probably within a decade or so.
That quick?! That would be awesome!
How bout corn hole?
NCAA chess would be a bit of fun.
How about quarters or beer pong?? JFC…

Jim Belushi as the Bobby Knight-type high school chess coach.

Okay, this board is officially aging! This is what you play when your knees are too screwed up to play tennis and you've lost steps to being out of shape. Toss in limited range due to arthritis and I can see the geriatric desire to be an Olympian coming true. I guess curling requires too much movement in the lower back, huh?

There are now pickleball clubs at 34 universities including 25 Division I schools.

This blog suggests that Collegiate Pickleball organize outside of the "deteriorating NCAA".

It does suggest that college tennis players switch to pickleball for a pro career.

Another interesting idea would be to permit alumni play on college teams, perhaps in age-based groups. NCAA team tennis has three doubles and six singles matches, but the three doubles matches only count for one point in a best of seven team event. A team needs to win two of three doubles (single-set) matches to get the doubles point in the team score. The six singles matches (best of three sets) give one point each in the best of seven format.

If you had alumni Open, O-30, O-40, O-50, O-60, O-70 matches they could collectively count one point in the team result.

Pickleball might also be Title IX friendly if you both men's and women's singles and doubles, and mixed doubles.
Alas, poor Badminton, we knew you well...

LOL. When I saw this, only recently having become aware of the existence of pickleball, I figured it was a game one can play if you aren't good at sports, either due to age or lack of coordination.

Or chessboxing. Play alternating rounds of chess and boxing, and first one to get either a checkmate or knockout wins. It’s actually a totally real sport and even has 2 competing leagues that each give out their own “world champion” trophies.
Tennis is already a sport.

Pickleball is just less athletic tennis.

I could see it happening for Title IX reasons but it being a relatively new sport it would be hard for it to gain traction. The NAIA would be more likely to start it.
Pickleball seems to be gaining some solid momentum. It actually looks like it might be fun to play.

But that would only be shown on the Ocho after dodge juggling and slippery steps.

I do see Women's Flag Football being an NCAA sport before this, though.
