According to SFA coach-- YES. FB only conference.

Coach Carthal says the five WAC football teams will merge with the ASUN teams and form a football conference. And maybe in a few years we all move up to FBS. He also said the original plan when the Texas4 joined the WAC was to move up to FBS but Sam changed everything by moving early.

Topic starts about the 56:10 mark.

Good find. Same show that had the UCA AD break the ASUN news.
I was told this by lion1983 earlier this month. Glad to finally hear someone in the know say it out loud.
If a WAC-ASUN FB only league is created. "IF". Here are some opinions:

--ASUN must have abandoned the idea of finding enough members to keep FB as a league sport.

-- The WAC is having "number" troubles also--- (nine is ideal for eight conf. games round robin) and has run out of new prospects.

-- ZERO ASUN members are likely to go to the OVC (Not even UCA)

-- OVC has convinced TTU and Tenn. St. to stay (for now)

-- If it happens-- a more stable future and eight conference games to help scheduling struggles.
The proposed new league (FB only)-- start FALL 2024??

AP
UNA
EKU
UCA
SFA
Tarleton
SUU
UT
ACU
UTRGV (2026)

IF lost one in 2026 or later would still be OK --- nine teams (8 games).

2023...

And KSU could be a part of it for 1 season dependent on scholarship allotment.

What it's is saying is, SHSU, JSU and KSU either, couldn't wait on this to happen (although CUSA was not an option when this was planned) or they didn't want to be with certain schools involved.

UCA has no desire to join the OVC... (EKU, UNA,APSU either, these are peer institutions)

There is more movement involved in this than most people realize.
Likely EKU and either SFA or Tarleton will be in CUSA before this happens.
Perhaps more if there is more movement from the pac and/or mwc.

So I'm calling BS it will never happen unless you can find more schools to get ready to move. Or unless there are major upcoming changes involving a P5 split.
I like that a lot. Both conferences need more bodies for football and both have a lot of strong teams with ambition. Wax/ASUN in a real (football only) merger is as deep as mvfc imo. If someone is able to rise to the top and be the final boss, it could grow to be the best fcs football.

Absolutely. Whether this ever has an FBS component or not, this is the stability the ASUN and WAC have needed for the current FCS schools.

This was always stated as the original plan. Jax St got a CUSA bid and made the jump. I would think we'll keep with this unless an existing FBS conference invites us. In the meantime, the merger for football makes sense for 2023 FCS football.

Yes on all accounts. This was the original plan. Jax State and Sam Houston got calls from CUSA and jumped sooner. Carthel discussed this at about the 54 min mark in that podcast. If some FBS conference calls, those invitees will likely make a quick acceptance. Otherwise, there seems to be a plan in place to merge and provide some security to these FCS schools for the immediate future.
None of this should prevent ASUN from inviting the likes of Western Florida and Western Georgia... or the WAC from maybe taking on 1 or 2 more teams.

I can eventually see a separation at the FBS level a few decades down the road.

IDK about that. I think the got an invite and they took it. KSU has been in the ASUN for non football spots for almost 20 years. I don't even think it is posable to move a conference into the FBS. I think the rest of the ASUN should combine with the WAC. It is better then the OVC/Big South or Southland.
This will be a good conference. While I still want us go to FBS, I think this will be a great FCS home for however long we're here.

I think you just answered your own question and the question of others. To me, this seems to be the most logical path. The WAC has a long history as an FBS conference. I'm sure Coach Carthel wouldn't be blowing smoke about it if the lawyers of that conference didn't feel pretty confident that rejoining FBS was possible down the road.

But, until then, I'm excited for this new FCS football conference to be announced!

I wondering about the name and branding. Definitely eager for the announcement.

The way I understand it is, because the WAC was FBS before, the NCAA will allow them back to FBS provided they show continuity.

The way it has been explained to me is, the WAC and ASUN put football schools together in FCS for a few years (also to my understanding, the past two seasons will count). When Tarleton and Utah Tech complete their transitions, the WAC will accept all ASUN football schools as full members. At that point, the non football schools in the WAC will have found homes in other conferences (some going to the ASUN) at that point, a few more schools will(should) join the WAC.

Also to my understanding, it has to be called the WAC the duration of FCS to continue continuity.

That would be a very interesting dynamic to pull from FCS or other G5/6 conferences at that point to expand to 12 or 14. Even as affiliates.
