Know what I would like to see? A Win. that's all. Stack wins. You have had the opportunity to "see" other guys due to injuries. But you don't just throw guys out there. That's a bit ridiculous. There are no practice games. There is no preseason. These are league games that matter. We have a losing record. Do you want to send a message that that doesn't matter? Or do you want so send a message that we may have lost a few, but we are still NIU... and you don't mess with NIU. You do not take NIU for granted.

I want to send the latter message. And I am sure Hammock does as well.

we shall see.

Does 5-7 really make you that much happier than 4-8? How many stories are there about bench guys who only got a shot due to extenuating circumstances and went in to be great? . If we are on a 5 game win streak I’d say dont mess with the line up. But right now this team has no playmakers or identity. Get a couple kids out there and look for a spark. Alvarado finally got in and the dude played great.

A win is nice but working towards more wins next year is better.

Setting a tone would make me happy. Also rewarding guys who fought like hell and put in the time to get playing time. Any win is a good win, and wins are the goal.
Now, I am all for seeing who you have .. (but hell, if you don't know by now?) I have no problem giving a guy or two some snaps -- specially depending on the game situation ( e.g., if we are up big-- rest some guys- keep them healthy. If we are down big, give someone else a shot.) But I don't think anyone should (and I don't think Hammock will) ever just play guys so we can "see what we have." Show me what you got by playing hard in practice. If the guys playing in the games are the ones who showed the most in practice-- why am I going to take away their playing time?

I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. Get a huge lead and empty the bench. That should be the goal -- every game. Not to stay close and win at the end. Not to "outlast them or out tough them." Just put the foot down on the accelerator and don't let up. Then you can get other guys in the game.

I'm with ChiHuskie.....I want to win.

You want young players to play to get used to game speed. There are some guys who just play better under the lights than they practice. You are looking for guys who play better under pressure.

I just don’t think we have the horses to get a big lead. If the goal is to get Cremascoli reps then leave the WRs he has worked with in practice in the game. That’s fine. But if you wanna throw Lomax out there for two series I don’t think it’s bad to get Jalen Johnson some catches too. It’s hard to defend any of the back up QBs not sharing reps. I’d feel different if we had a guy like the WMU back up kid. Lots of upside. We have like 3 myeh type back ups that are just trying to survive.

Defense is different. They’ve thrown so many combinations out there it would make almost zero difference to get a few more guys some action. Especially D-line as they sub guys all game.

I agree. It's tough to manage all that. And I am not sure the coaches have done a good job to date. There are A LOT of variable to consider. One overarching theme or philosophy would be good. I am not sure we have one. But I am not in the locker room, so who cares what I think as far as that (or anything?) The proof will be in the pudding. We may not know for a year or two whether this team was half-baked and never finished baking, or whether it was half baked, and with time to finish baking it became a delicious cake.
YOU PLAY TO WIN THE DAMN GAME. THAT'S THE BEAUTIFUL THING ABOUT SPORTS, YOU DON'T JUST PLAY TO PLAY. YOU PLAY TO WIN.

Not sure why this is even up for debate. Hammock should play the guys that give us the best chance to win the football game tomorrow. Whether that means some younger guys get some reps, or not, I really don't care. You play to win and it would be nice heading into the offseason with some momentum.

Momentum doesn’t really exist. Did sitting Rocky vs WMU last year in the final and losing badly hurt NIUs momentum? You can play to win and still get young guys some PT. I imagine in a lot of positions the difference between the 2nd,3rd and 4th stringers may be minimal. Guys like Mccray, Travis and Dozier are back ups anyway. Almost no loss replacing the reps they get. It’s hard to say - play the guys that give you the best chance to win WHEN those guys have not been winning.

+1000.

There is only one guarantee for next year and that is the team won't be the same, so you need to see what else we have to try and get back to the level we were at in 2021. Need depth for sure, so if someone steps up and can push for PT heavily in 2023 I am all for that. The only way is to let them play.

How does sticking with what hasn't worked, work?
NIU is 3-7, so plenty of teams have been 'messing' with NIU.
That Toldeo game at home was embarrassing being down 35-7 at halftime.
That CMU game at home was embarrassing being down 21-0 at halftime.
One QB who can't run and the other QB who isn't allowed to pass! And the QB who didn't run in the last game had 27% of his completions to the other team!

Indeed, we shall see.
Before thinking (more like guessing) about a prediction I checked whether the Miami QB (Gabbert) is going to play. Here's what I saw:

Gabbert also suffered an ankle injury on the final play of the game, putting his status for this Wednesday night in doubt. Head coach Chuck Martin said late last week that Gabbert was in a boot but he's hopeful the extra day will give him enough time to heal and be cleared to play. If Gabbert can't go, Aveon Smith would get the call again. He's completing 52 percent of his passes on the season with seven touchdowns and four interceptions, and the team is 3-3 with him as the starter.

I'm saying that Gabbert doesn't play, so our Huskies squeeze out a close one:

NIU: 24
Miami: 20

We knocked WMU out of bowl eligibility last week and a W over Miami knocks them out of bowl eligibility, so we are playing the spoiler.
BG going to take down the mighty Turds. Man does the MAC suck this year. Not a single dominant team.

Practice will show us nothing - Hammock has no ******* clue who our QB is going to be past Rocky because our defense is so bad everyone was like it there looking like Aaron Rodgers.

We have to see kids in games to see what we have. And not just because they’ve earned it, but because you have to evaluate depth.
So will both Waylee and Brown be injured? I understand if they were banged up, no reason to risk aggravating injuries. Not going anywhere this year. I hope some of the young guys who might help next year get a few plays. See what they have in a real game. I have limited cable so will be out at a bar watching. Sucks they are not also on ESPN+
Billy Dozier is listed as a WR., been saying for sometime he is not a RB. Starting to believe in our Dline. Need help inside LB and scheme. Feel we have improved on parts of the D. I wish Fletcher was our starting LB, explosive, strong athlete with the right size. His brother was a LB at Michigan State.

4 years of recruiting WRs and this is tonights depth chart:

Tucker - Carey recruit
Dozier - Running Back

Thornton - Transfer
Travis - Carey Recruit

Mccray - Carey Recruit
Rutkiewicz - Transfer

Hammock recruits waiting in the wings:
Toure
Urwhiler
Gumbs(whom I do think will be good)
Pierre
Armstrong
Johnson
Pipkin
Pardridge

This along with the TE recruiting should be very disheartening when you look at the future of this offense. Thank God for the transfer portal. Ham has been killing it at RB recruits but has been slowly destroying the WR and TE positions.
Any chance Waylee or Brown returns tonight? Would help!
I don't care what happens. This season has really taught me to lower my expectations. Just punch these guys in the mouth. Really hurt them with our backup squad of a team. Again, we've been in every game but Toledo.
I'm curious why the ESPN matchup predictor has us at 60% chance of winning this game: https://www.espn.com/college-football/ga.../401416646
