that game ruled. sucks we didnt win. me and my friends kept yelling 'give it to bates' which seems like good strategy.

lets ride this rocket until it explodes - we're in for a real fun year.
Oh my god yes. Winters were depressing enough without Rob Murphy's slog fest which resulted in Ls. I am so excited for the season, we are in uncharted territory AND I cannot wait to make the 10 hour trek to Ypsi a few times this year because we won't see another player like Emoni Bates at Eastern again in our lifetime and Noah ain't too bad either. Must see basketball.

I hope everyone here. We're still talking about the Sweet 16 team over 30 years later, sadly a lot of us will be lucky to have another 30 years left on this planet, so yeah, this is a really big deal.

Bob - you’re on the money! However we have to remember Emoni is only 18 years old so when he has an off night or two - and he will - hopefully everyone is supporting the young man!
I think this hire goes to show Stan Heath is seriously committed to owning a slice of the pie in recruiting metro Detroit and it is a believable statment to say he will succeed.

I agree. This is a solid hire.

Those in the HS ranks have a different view on him. Much the same as Nate Oats. Recruiting HS players away from their HS...... not viewed highly.

King, I understand your concern. Hotshot HS coaches like Oats and Perry Watson bend the rules and field teams with "stolen" recruits from other districts and get college job offers as a result. It does appear to be ethically questionable.

Nevertheless, the world is what it is and when was the last time EMU hired such an individual as an assistant coach when Buffalo and U-M were very eager to do so? We can be pure from an ethics standpoint and yet see Buffalo destroy us on the court with Perkins, Clark and whole bunch more of SE Michigan players. Or we can join the aggression party. I say let's do it.
Just remember guys that this is NOT a recruiting position. That said, he does know players, etc. and if there are players who will be in the transfer portal, then maybe he is a conduit.

All of that said, Geeter was one of his players so there is that benefit of player and coach.
Some final thoughts on the Michigan game. Eastern Michigan fans have every right to do proud of their young bb team. As coming off a win in their first game playing together, they went toe to toe with one of the Goliath's in college basketball.

They performed admirably together led by Emoni's 30 points, Noah's 19 points, who both brought EMU fans to their feet time and time again with acrobatic drives, and made jumpers, that resulted in EMU scoring 45-points in the first-half. EMU led Michigan 45-42 at the half.

In the second half, EMU's offensive prowess continued to find success as they scored 38-points, and led for over 15 minutes of the 20 minute second half, before Michigan won 88-83.

EMU's outstanding play was a total team effort as EMU scored as many two's and three's as Michigan, and out-shot Michigan on three's percentage-wise by a good bit.

Michigan's advantage was it's height inside and scoring 5 more points than EMU from the foul-line.

EMU's future looks bright this season as we look forward to tonight's game against Bradley.

Side note. I watched the end of Temple's big win over Villanova. Congrats on that nice win, Miggy. 04-cheers

I’m exactly where this writer is at:

“While Bates’ array of step-back threes and contested jumpers were impressive against a Top 25-caliber opponent, he will never live up to the unfair expectations that were thrust upon him early in his high school career. He’s far from the next Kevin Durant. He lacks the physical tools to become anything close to that. But could Bates reestablish himself as a potential first-round NBA draft pick if he can score efficiently while also proving that he can withstand the physicality of college basketball? That, after Friday night, suddenly seems more realistic.“

I will second that with great emphasis.

The two most ballyhooed Michigan HS prospects in my lifetime were Earvin Johnson and Antoine Joubert. Magic had the physique, Antoine did not. Antoine and Emoni could get any shot they wanted in HS because of their height and would have soundly beaten Magic in a game of horse. Unfortunately, the physical and skill set horizon increases beyond shooting as a player moves from HS to NCAA and the NBA and Emoni does need to do some work.

Honestly, I doubt that Emoni will be a first-round pick, but I do think he is far more likely to sharpen his skills and develop his body at EMU than he would have had he stayed at Memphis.
