Stopped by Scott Park today to see if anything was going on with the new turf on the baseball field. Was surprised to see work on both fields.

Baseball infield was being graded but no turf yet. Also were doing some work on the dugouts and the bullpen. Softball had some concrete work going on and work on the dugouts. There were two trucks there from the company that is installing the new turf
.
I spoke to a guy working there who seemed to know what was going on. He said they were going to build a new press box for softball. He mentioned that the Scott Park land sale had been completed and that UT had worked out a deal to lease the ball diamonds area.

Quite honestly, I'm not really sure how much he knew, but I'm reporting what he said. He also mentioned that eventually the teams would be moved back to main campus. I asked why they would put that much money into Scott Park if the teams were going to be moving and he really didn't know accept to say UT was fundraising for new facilities. Not sure I would buy that, but whatever.
In a recent meeting that involved senior administration with Facilities (not Athletics) in response to a question asked, it was stated that there are no immediate or short term plans to move baseball/softball from Scott Park to main campus. So seems like it will take direct funding raising efforts by Athletics and is more likely a 10+ year timeframe-and not shorter one.

Land sale? Who bought it?

correction: 5-10yr time frame for potential new facility on main campus IF fund raising is successful
An interview with coach Reinstetle is on the current Rocket Podcast. He said that he expects to move to an on-campus facility in the next 3-5 years. Surprised me, especially with the money being spent at Scott Park, but I guess the renovations are just to keep the program relevant.

from the timeline I have head from Facilities, that seems overly optimistic time frame unless efforts are advancing quicker than expected on fund raising, the fact that money is being spent at Scott Park, 5-10 years seems more realistic as UT is not going to spend monies to build new fields on main campus, it will require donations of $10-15 million+
If they announce plans to build two multi-million dollar stadiums for sports no one cares about amidst the current financial landscape, they're going to have a revolt on their hands.

Still want Fetterman to be used as a beige monster in left field :-)

If I hit powerball ever, I rarely buy tickets, I would cut the check for that and new lights in the glass bowl

There are alumni and fans that care about this program. And I love what our coach is doing for the program and am excited about what can happen.

Really good crowds at the games at Fifth Third Field downtown. There is something to grow there.

You were thinking in the bowl between Health and Fetterman or between Douglas and Fetterman?

Beige Monster would be neat. There's already some windows up there on the Health side, for the pinky's out crowd... I don't know WHY there are windows up there but they are there.

I think I'm beating a dead horse here, and if the land is sold it's a different story, but here's my take. When baseball and softball were on main campus the crowds were very small. With reduced students, I don't see how that improves. I appreciate that we may be on an upswing in terms of winning.

I think it would cost $15 million for both stadiums. We need alumni to step up to make it happen. For $5 million Scott Park would be really nice. For half of that, still a good facility with a team building, indoor hitting/pitching facility in place and a concessions/restroom building already there.

I would venture a guess that those people number in the hundreds....that's not worth spending $15M on new stadiums when the University is essentially at Enron levels of budget emergency. If T9 is an issue, just create a women's LAX team and reinstate the Men's Soccer team or Wrestling team and use the existing facility.

As someone who just had the team he played on for four years (UC Soccer) downsized into oblivion a few years ago, yes it hurts, but it is the right move financially for a department that runs $only about $9M in generated revenue over $31M in budgeted expenses every year.

From day one when idea was floated to move baseball/softball to main campus (and was placed into most recent Facilities Master Plan) it was dependent on fund raising, if there are alumni, donors and corporate sponsors who can raise the $10-15 million (just like there was for improvements to Glass Bowl and Savage Arena) then it happens. If not then those teams stay at Scott Park as there is simply no way under the current operating budget and declining revenue financial environment at UT that the Board of Trustees approves that kind of expenditure for Athletics, regardless of what fans and supporters of those sports think or would want to happen. That's simply the brutal reality.

Yep...and considering Athletics has averaged just under $989k in annual gifts over the last 5 years, that will take an eternity to raise that kind of money.

Home plate would be in the SE corner of the parking lot behind the computer center, LF Fetterman, RF Douglas Road 41^39'27"N 83^36'37" W +/-

I think i would also commit some of my powerball winnings to a parking garage connected to Savage so season ticket holders and donors would have dedicated parking and not have to wrestle with students. $30 million would do it, peanuts out of a 1.2 billion powerball jackpot.

Heck maybe we would only need to trim the computer center for softball. Give them a beige monster too

A university looking for cash should not implement a field plan that requires teams to hit into the wrong direction of the sun and require relocating an established road network on campus

Does that mean 5th-3rd is pointed the wrong way? Their homeplate is west end of the stadium. I was wondering footprint, if there was enough space where you indicated you wanted the Indianasniff Ballpark so I looked at google map to compare that lot to the footprint of 5th-3rd and was surprised it looks like it would fit.
Turf going down
