we've alluded to it here, but this is now a real ask

Memphis has big plans to reshape four publicly-owned stadiums and change the Memphis sports landscape for generations. The city just needs a lot of money to do it.

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland and his administration are seeking $684 million from the state of Tennessee, including $350 million in cash, for significant renovations to FedExForum, planned renovations to Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, enhancements to AutoZone Park and replacing the long-shuttered Mid-South Coliseum with a soccer-specific stadium to house 901 FC.

If the legislature has to approve it, we are screwed.
The timing is perfect. They are giving away $500 million to the Titans. Their stadium is only 23 years old.
The 350M in cash is less than the 500M Nashville got for the new domed stadium. The remainder would come from the increase in sales tax from hotel, car rental revenue.

My guess is the FEF and SBLB are easily the top 2 priorities.

The timing of this must be in response to the announcement of Nashville's eleventy billion $$$ domed stadium.

It is perfect timing!
Hope we get it. Love the 901FC idea

The $500M is state bond capacity which must be paid back, not cash. The difference is significant.

I get that, but I'm pretty sure Memphis is asking as a loan, not simply a gift.

Makes sense.

Agree. For reasons outside the scope of this Forum (not just political or policy differences), the supermajority will not be in mood IMO to grant Memphis any favors.

It does not help, also, that the Memphis area received massive funds recently for the Ford plant because each Grand Division is jealous of each other.

I very much want to be wrong.

I saw another, older article that said the state was giving a one-time $500 million cash contribution. I am guessing that was wrong.

Maybe, I guess we will learn more later.

The AP article stated "The Tennessee legislature approved $500 million in bonds"...
The only thing I don't like is bundling four facilities into one request. Each of those things has different interested parties. Too many cooks...
thanks mayor

The Daily Memphian said he was presenting it to the Memphis City Council, not the state. And they said it included $539 million in state funding, but doesn't mention asking the state for it. I thought the implication was that it was already approved, but maybe asking the City Council is just the first step.

And some of you need to apologize for calling Laird a liar for saying the lions share of the funding wouldn't come from the University.

If I did that, I apologize, Laird.

Just the Tiger's share.

When did Laird say that? The Daily Memphian headlines were that Strickland said it.
