Did he save the ETSU football program during his time - 2000 to 2003? What exactly did he do for ETSU athletics? Did he bolt ETSU for greener pastures? Most recently, did he turn once good GA Tech football & basketball programs around?

And - don’t know how this worked out: Oregon State University has filed suit against former OSU athletic director Todd Stansbury for breach of contract.

I’m of the opinion we need new blood, someone who isn’t tied to anyone here and has a bit more objective-ness. No more good ol’ boy hires. Get someone who’s an associate or assistant AD at a P5. Sure, they may not be here for 20 years, but we don’t want that. A good AD is typically effective for about 5-7 years, like most college administrators.

Agree 100%. We need new blood. Let us make this new AD a fantastic hire. Yes and if he is successful, he will probably move up to P5 job. That should be what we want and expect instead of getting someone to stay here the rest of their lives.
New Blood, Fantastic AD.

What are the objectives the posters on this board want to see achieved by the Athletic Dept?

Well first & foremost, let's get the budget out of the hole. Story just broke on WJHL that athletics is at least $700K in the hole, and they completely bungled the Simon Harris (we already knew that) and provided Scott Carter a full year's severance walking out the door. When you fire someone for cause (ie, Harris), he doesn't get to walk away with a $150K check. That's ridiculous.

Second, they need to address title IX. My personal opinion, even though we are in the hole, is to not subtract a men's sport, but add a women's sport. We have subtracted before, and that causes a number of issues, including loss of morale. This can be done and still keep the budget in reasonable shape. How? Fund raising, which is a constant if you're the AD, and unfortunately, student fees, which are always going up but ETSU is still a cheap option. I don't like the latter, and hope they can keep that down or not increase it.

Third, what sport? I know they're not interested in lacrosse, but lacrosse is definitely a sport gaining in popularity and they could play on the football field. SHHS and DBHS both have women's lacrosse clubs, and I wouldn't doubt it will be a varsity sport soon. If you don't want to do lacrosse, there's bowling, which I think could be done. There's space in the Culp to build a small bowling alley, which students could use when the team isn't using it. That could be a cool add-on to the newly renovated Culp, and there's a cost and maintenance, but I think it could be done.

Fourth, take care of the softball trainwreck. Finish the investigation, and if you fire the Hendrixes for cause, then don't pay them for Chrissake!

Fifth, try to build our women's sports, because many of them aren't doing so hot, and there's been issues galore on that side of the athletic department. We have to be better at creating a positive environment, not a "I don't want to hear this so I'm putting my fingers in my ears" environment, or "We're going to investigate this for the next 9 months until everyone forgets about it" environment.

Gotta be better, and never be satisfied with where you're at. These are not a priority list - just things that gotta get done.
Well said. I would be very interested to hear the candidates Sander and Noland are considering. There has not been a peep about this since Carter resigned.
Yes would love to hear some of the names sneaking out.
ETSU and apparently the majority of the supporters are perfectly happy being a mid level FCS program. Having said that, IMO, that doesn't require a high priority on hiring an expensive AD.

The SoCon is what it is and has no aspiration to grow.

With the current financial situation, and being a member of the SoCon, spending more money on non essential personnel or adding sports is not warranted.

Dr Noland could ask Dr Sanders to assume the Ad postion again. He built the program before, he can do it again.

ETSU athletics has gone about as high as it will ever go in the last few years.

Yes. there are problems but some of the major ones have already been addressed and others are in the processing state. There are legal situations that the people on this board have no knowledge.

Fund raising comes up constantly on this board. The "Best Fans In The SoCon" is a fair statement as far as attendance of events but doesn't hold up as far as donating monies to maintain, improve or build facilities. Many times, on this board, I've seen complaints on ticket prices, pay for parking, lousy home schedules on MBB and FB, need on campus arena. get big donors, etc.

These problems and complaints could be addressed but it takes money and lots of it. So far the majority of fans show little appetite to donate regularly to the Athletic Department.

Spending a lot of money on a SoCon AD or adding minor sports, how does that get 'joe fan to open his pocket book'?

ETSU had the highest paid MBB & FB coaches. They both won big and won Championships. They both left, as expected. SoCon is and always will be a stepping stone for successful coaches. Unfortunately with the transfer portal and NIL ( both need to be, IMO, changed and rules and regs put in force ) the good players will also be poached.

ETSU had the highest attendance in MBB and numerous sellouts in FB. A press release and a football stadium rendering by Scott Carter showed an increase of 3000 in seating, additional concessions/restrooms and a FieldHouse. His release said the construction would begin as soon as first season in GREENE STADIUM ended. We all know that didn't happen. Has anyone seen any improvements or plans to expand the stadium or build an arena? How about a track. No track at ETSU. Every high school has a track.

The SoCon is what it is. ETSUs athletic budget is a good SoCon budget. ETSU will be a good SoCon product.

Well, if a Title IX lawsuit is waged, you either add sports or cut the male sports.

Dick Sander is beyond retirement - he could ask him to do it again, but I don't think he really wants to. I know I wouldn't want to at his age, and he has a well-deserved retirement. He's doing us a favor at the moment.

I don't think things are quite as static as you state them, that everyone is "happy" being a mid level FCS program. I know plenty of my friends were pissed we lost to Citadel & Furman, as was I. We know we can be better, but I'm also willing to be a little patient with our new coach having coached his fourth game in his career. I'm not a UT fan, for Chrissake!

I do agree with you on the misunderstanding of fans, ETSU fans (and others) on the price of success. They want to get it for nothing, and it doesn't work that way. No team that wins has "cheap" season tickets.

I've been a donor a long time, but don't have the means to be a major donor... maybe some day. Regardless, I'm willing to pay for a good product.

It is always about MONEY, obviously, and always will be. The big boys are now working 24/7 to get it all, so to speak, with these mega-millions TV, et al deals, mega conferences, the 12 team CFP system, and going semi-pro with players shopping for deals as free agents through the Portal. The big boys are driving a wedge between themselves and the rest in football now and likely basketball in the future. The rest are being left in their dust — and forced to fund their programs from donations and student fees, which I do not see as sustainable.
