Looks like the basketball scrimmage is being advertised (Vanzee is so on top of everything!).

Wonder if the coaching staff can coach the event OR if is will be be pick up game?

Just noticed that hoops practices are underway.

Assume coaches can run it.
I called the athletic department and confirmed that the scrimmage is open to the public and free to attend. No tickets, just show up at the arena at scrimmage time…

Great info, thanks for sharing Ramy!
Tonight is the scrimmage. Any insights by those attending? Thanks

Wizards and Warriors are playing as I write. Hint: the x-hibition game is in Japan so it isn't a 6 a.m. EDT game.
The pre-event: Men’s Basketball Golf Outing

The best money I ever spent. I recommend it for anyone in coming years. I was across the buffet line from George the Iceman Gervin. Grant Long, one of the Thomas brothers, Brian Tolbert were all there too. Along with some other former players (and I believe someone said Derrick Coleman too).

Also met Monty and Noah’s mom!! Very impressive woman in general, and great to see her support of the program as well. Coach Heath joked that at some schools they have sponsors paying the players, but at EMU the players Mom is the sponsor.

…stay tuned for an update from the scrimmage…
Starting Lineups

Green
2 Tyson
5 Noah
0 Rice
1 Golson
23 Geeter

White
3 Luka
10 Lovejoy
13 Prakash
4 Billingsley
35 Randle
I suspect if Emoni was available, he starts on the green team in place of Rice. Rice slips down to the White team, and Prakash (EMU Royalty) on the bench.

Not sure if any significance to the subs for the Teams, but in order of appearance…

Green Subs
22 Jihad
12 Wells

White Subs
Pranger
33 Ballard
30 Zaher
At half-time, the GREEN team is leading the White team 32-27. (This is an edited post, had it reversed earlier). Nonetheless, still think it implies a deep team minus Emoni.
Tyson Acuff is going to be SOLID. Good 3 point shooting, hustles, and always seems to be in the right places. Still assume Noah and Emoni will be the stars. But Tyson won’t be that far off. Great pickup-assessment complete.

Great. The hope was always for 3 excellent perimeter players while we find out the front court.
GREEN team wins 69-65 over the WHITE team…. Should be a deep team!

I should add he can handle the ball and drive too. Did not mean to imply he is going to be camped out at the perimeter. Not at all. I think Noah and Tyson will share the primary handling duties. Noah probably has the better vision on his passes than Tyson, but I think Tyson is physically stronger and might have better endurance when teams start banging around. This will be an exceptional backcourt. Period.

Nice write-up. Did Noah have any turnovers? Shoot well? Like to read your initial impressions on other players.

Unfortunately, Noah did have a couple turnovers losing track of his dribble or dribbled into opponents (similar to last year), and he had one 3 ball that was way off the mark. But overall he shot well both inside and out as well as had some amazing drives where he schools multiple opponents to achieve spacing and a controlled shot (also similar to last year).

I think where I saw most improvement from Noah was with his passing. He had a vision on a couple assists that I don’t think he had last year (thought his brother Monty did, but not Noah), and on a couple other passes the touch was just absolutely perfect for the circumstances.

I will comment on the other players later. But don’t get too excited for that since Noah and Tyson are the primary strengths of the team, imo.

That little spin move around the basket by Geeter was sweet.

Excited for the season to start.
The Frontcourt…

Golson and Legend are the clear starters. They just play so much quicker and more intense then the rest.

Legend had a legit 3 point shot and had a beautiful baseline spin move (it was shown in the video KPJ posted above). So he will be a great option to stretch the floor or dump off to on the baseline. He plays intense defense which is a good thing for sure, but conversely I expect him to be in a lot of foul trouble in real games.

Golson seems much quicker offensively then I remember from last year. The coaches seemed to be emphasizing to all the big men to keep their hands up further out from the basket, and Golson was the best at doing this consistently. Hard to say from a scrimmage, but hopefully this will translate to more consistent defense for Golson this year (ie, keeping his hands up might keep his feet down as he used to bite on pump fakes pretty bad last year).

I am assuming J-Bill is the clear first off the bench for the frontcourt. He seems skilled, but did not play with near the level of intensity that either Golson or Legend played with- not close. Might just be his style of play.

Randle seemed to have some good moments, but still seems very, very raw.

Jihad had some good moments too. He has a lot of tools. I just don’t think he is putting it all together. But glad he is in the stable.

Ballard was mostly effective. Truthfully, he might be a primary backup in the frontcourt along with JBill. I just think the coaches should go with the Jihad and Randle for development.

Yes, and more impressively he did this in a pretty congested low post- ie, it was not some isolation play for him. He basically bailed out Tyson from a bad drive- this will be a nice feature to have from time to time… But to manage expectations a little, this was by far his best move/play of the scrimmage.
