Welcome to Toledo. This is what Jason Candle-coached teams do: if it’s a big game, they don’t show up. Zero ability to rise to the occasion. A 20 point loss would have been somewhat impressive. This was a damn freaking embarrassment.

This is why this athletic program struggles to grow a fan base in the biggest city in the MAC. They never give the fans hope of anything special. Football, basketball, doesn’t matter: we choke when the big moments come.

Many of us will tell you that Candle was never the right choice to begin with, but your predecessor was lazy, then panicked, & then drank the kool aid such that we got stuck with Candle longer than we should have.

You wanted this job. Show us something—don’t just take our money. Time to stop the bleeding & begin the re-build before it’s too late to even do that.
Well stated. I’m not holding my breath for Blair to do anything
Toledo Football program is dead in the water as long as Candle is the HC.

The way I see it, we just got $1.8 million to help towards a buy-out of Candle. President Posten should kick in the rest from his own immense salary. Let’s just be done with this.

Agree 100%
What do you tell your team after this embarrassing lost ? The drum roll, other embarrassing losts around college football tonight:

Alabama 63-7 over UL Monroe,
UM 59-0 over UConn,
Oak St 63-7 over Ark (Pine Bluff),
Tenn 63-6 over Akron.

I'd encourage the defense to put forth even a hint of an effort - much the opposite of what they put forth on the last two osu scores.

77 is too many.
This is the right time for AD Blair to do a "Nebraska." This loss and especially the lack of effort and no real game plan is a total embarrassment. Why wait? Let Candle go now. Begin a national search for a new top coach. UT deserves better than what they have.

We are not Nebraska though. There is not that type money. Taking the presumption that this is Candle's last year, he will recruit. He will do all the other duties. We'll be no worse off if he's here and welcomed as he should be. Any problems with contract are in the last AD's resume.

There's a difference in being a coach not up to expectations and being a human not up to expectations. Candle is only the former and that's honestly marginal. Taking the money from this game and wasting it, would put the AD on the wrong side of good business and strength of the athletic's programs.

I can see why some would see this as being stuck with Coach Candle. Unless they see a money source that won't cripple athletics, I'd say get used to stuck. His career will move on successfully at some level. His listing of strengths is at least as long as the losing. The number of players matriculating into a shot at the pros is enough to get him the next job.

IMO, he should be able to take with him from Toledo some feeling of loyalty for what he HAS accomplished.

It's nice to vent. It's better to be smart. :)
Blair told me back in June when I posed the question on “ how many wins will it take for JC to retain his job “ !!
He came back with a lot of intangibles related to the upcoming’s seasons success or failure …
So he may just see what plays out till the end of November…
If Candle wins 9+ games, some program will make it easy for B. Blair and take a chance on Candle …

Is this the last season on his contract? Can't remember if it was this year or next.

Agree with your assessment. He has to form his own opinion based on performance this year. No way should he fire him mid-season thinking that clears the way for a better search to begin. He can conduct a search now, just should not contact anyone at all. That gets out and the players are no longer focusing on games coming up, but rather the rumors. Probably already some of that going on, but not likely very much.

I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t become the first AD in history to take action on a fan’s disappointed take.

What will matter to him—especially as UT’s enrollment continues to fall—is $$$. That stuff comes from ticket sales & contributions/donations, and in this market, those only come with success. We already saw a slight drop in attendance from the Thursday night home opener to the 2nd home game on a SATURDAY night. It will be interesting to see the attendance # for homecoming.

Better blow the dust off of your check book if you want this to happen.

I thought his contract was extended this Summer. Apparently I was wrong. Thank God.
I'm not necessarily a Candle hater, I just feel like the program is mediocre and things are getting stale.
For the older folks.....

Dan had 2 losing seasons of 8.
Candle's never had a losing season.
Totally different types of schedules with Candle's teams playing several ranked opponents.

Didn't Simrell lose to number 3 Miami FLA by a touchdown... lost to #7 Fla St by a couple scores.... played a ranked Arizona close
