Moves have been made on the offensive side.

Edit: At first I thought Reihner was named new OC, but I now think I misread that and it was just mentioned again that he is acting OC.

"Kevin Reihner, in his third season at ODU, will take over as the offensive coordinator and continue as the offensive line coach."

I don't see the word "acting" in there anywhere. As I read it, you had it right the first time, and Reihner is the new OC. I guess we will just have to see how it plays out. Cheers! 04-cheers
Based on what I have heard/seen of our OL, I suspect that our offense under Kevin Reihner will be a bit more run oriented than pass oriented.

I would bet that we are pretty run heavy (assuming we aren't down in every game)

This is not encouraging news. ODU will face some stout defenses this season. They will have to stretch the field to have any success.

I kind of agree. I’m hoping Wolffs’ half year of experience and an offseason to work on the exposed weaknesses will make a huge difference. Just find a way to win. And Wolff did do that.

Passing is certainly more valuable than running, but I think we are still a much better running team than passing team. Our OL is better at run blocking and we have pretty good running backs.

How well we pass will likely determine how good/bad we are.
This is a really good story from Harry Minium on Coach Reihner.

Cheers, all! 04-cheers
Coach Reihner sounds like an excellent person and coach. I thought maybe Campbell was rushed a little bit into the OC role and I'm worried about that being the case with Reihner as well. Hopefully Rahne is able to help out and can get (or keep?) the right structure in place.

I’m a little worried myself. Some of these guys have new jobs halfway through camp and there is a lot of inexperience. I hope Rahne and the coaches know what they’re doing.

Just spitballing but the age of the staff has always concerned me. It probably helps with recruiting and we have seemingly been very good at that....but in terms of gameday Xs and Os and decisions within the course of the game, I continue to have concerns there. Last year was Rahnes first year so it entirely possible that he improves.

Rahne was the OC at a legit top program but being the head coach is a heck of a lot different than being the OC. And coaching the OL is totally different than being the playcaller.

I hope it all works out and I guess we will find out in a couple weeks.
G5 has historically been the proving grounds for coaches on the way up. I'd much rather have young, talented and ambitious coaches who are learning then old, worn out retreads.
I dont care if they roll out Bobby Bowdens corpse as long as they win.
Spoke to a college OC about 20 years ago.
He said play calling is a group effort. He said the problem for him was his focus on the execution of the offense on the play called. They had a second guy next to him that focused on the defense for each play called. They communicated in a way to efficiently evaluate what happened. Then there is the communication with the staff on the sidelines for what the players were telling them of what they are seeing. And all along, the HC was in the middle of all the play calling information. Timeouts before big plays are typically when the HC challenges the staff for what the best choice is for the next play.

But much of the decision making happens during the prep work for each game. They take what might be 6-8 plays for a situation and reduce it down to 2 or 3 for each opponent. If things aren't happening like they thought it would (from reviewing film) they expand the playbook in the second half.

My take from the long conversation is that things are fluid and communication is the most important aspect to play calling.

This!

Plus the young excel at the G5 level. They don’t start failing until they reach the P5 level. Y’all keep forgetting we’re not playing Clemson and Georgia every weekend. Look at some of the coaching staffs around the country and you will see they are not too old. I think at some point App State had a really young HC! You don’t have to be old to understand and win at this game.
