As soon as I heard of the NIL, the first school I thought of was SMU. They got the death penalty for something that completely legal now.

There will be a shift in power teams as schools continue to figure this out. Some of the “traditional” power schools will fall, and fall hard. Example, FSU produces teachers, they don’t make much money, going to be hard for them to keep up with schools that produce high level executives. Also have to think, if UPS and FEDEX get being Louisville and Memphis, watch out for those two. Nike already pumps money into Oregon, that will get even bigger now that he can use those athletes in ads.

Just think if Delta decided to get behind GaSt, RedBull behind Rutgers or Target behind Minnesota. In 5 years college sports will be completely different.

I've noticed that more and more coaches that are generally known to be advocates of players (like Mark Richt, Chris Petersen, and Kirk Ferentz) are increasingly wary of NIL and speaking out.

I really do think eventually the adults will need to retake control of the NCAA and regulate NIL to the point it almost doesn't even exist anymore. The alternative is that we've made college sports worse for the vast majority of athletes to make it better for a tiny percentage of football and MBB players.

Here’s a secret about rich people, they like to be around winners.

When corporate entities like Sam's Club and Arbys paid GSU players for little PR and publicity... I didn't think much of it. $5k-$10k spending money won't change how college athletics operate.

But SMU alums internally paying football/basketball players salaries like professional athletes? Not sure how you regulate potential corruption and disparity in recruiting. On the ethical side, how do you protect kids from shady individuals? do teenagers with money have the maturity to stay away from trouble?

That's some nice spending money, especially since these guys don't have to worry about paying for college.

There needs to be some sort of formal training on NIL ethics that all teams go through. Players should know what to look out for when it comes to these deals, and how to invest. I'm sure a lot of players will just blow it all anyway, but it would help some.

A lot of the NIL will have contracts attached to the money. Even though they are free to transfer as far as the school is concerned, if they take money and then transfer they would have to give it all back. Same I assume for quitting. NIL might be the one things that prevents losing top players, unless the next school just up and pays back their contract with the former club/entity.

That’s already happening. What about those signed freshman that leave their home state to go to another s school, get the cars and money. Then next season have transferred back to Home State U.

SMU was always going to do this. Their rich alum paid to have June Jones and his huge salary. They are always willing to spend huge to try and be relevant. They may not have many fans but the ones they do have are RICH. Never been to a more smarmy college party than one I went to at SMU.

Texas State really seems to be the ECU of Texas. Not sure how off-base I am. I'd have to go to a few house parties, if those even still exist.

TXST is known as the big party school in the state. The good and bad that comes with that reputation.
