James Madison takes on the Red Wolves on October 8. What can the Dukes expect?

This dude is a homer. Only have you losing to Ohio State, South Alabama, and Troy.

You asked, "what can JMU expect"? I'm expecting us to be competitive. That's about as far as I'll go.
I'm expecting us to beat the Red Wolves into their own turf.

Ark State ain’t winning 9 games this season.
The author basically admits 9 W's is a tall task for stAte.

Quote:Nine wins is an awful lot to ask for a program that most recently delivered only two. It’s not fair to Butch Jones, it’s not fair to the team, and it’s not fair to the fans. BetOnline has the over/under for Arkansas State at 4.5 victories.

Butch is a solid coach however, and I don't expect our game there to be an easy one. It would not shock me if they made a Bowl this year.

More like 4-5.
I expect Ark State to be better, but 9 wins better? Sorry, I just don't see it.. even in the Sun Belt west.

In regards to our game against them, I expect it to be close. It's definitely not a game I am penciling in as a loss, that's for sure.
I think it's a game we should expect to probably win. However, if we're gonna lose a game we probably shouldn't I think that has a lot of potential to be the one. That or GS, two road games in a row against opponents that put up terrible records last year just before we get in to a really tough and exciting stretch of the schedule.
To be fair to Howlraiser, he makes no qualms that is he unabashedly an AState fan. In fact, he's likely one of the few in our fan base who still has a ton of optimism. Unlike every other SBC school, we're struggling with season ticket sales this year because many fans have given up on the Athletic Department after years of poor decisions. Its going to take consistently winning to get us back where we were.

I'd say 6 wins would be our high-water mark at most. While Jones has unquestionably recruited a much better team, we have almost no depth to speak of at present. We're still at least one year away from breaking out, maybe 2.

That being said, I do believe we can beat you guys...

That’s the nice part about hope. It springs eternal. Even if it is a false hope. 04-cheers

Well hey, look at it this way. We've had to play App and Coastal basically every year. There's not any way we're not going to look at trading App for you guys on our schedule as anything more than giving us a chance at a win we normally wouldn't get.

Then again, we all thought we'd destroy App in 2014 and they waltzed into Jonesboro when we were 5-2 at the time and beat us. We returned the favor in Boone the next year, but the scars still remain.
Any fan of a SB team who doesn’t think JMU can beat them, is naive.

At the same time,

Any JMU fan who doesn’t think any other SB team can beat us, is naive.

I see 3 tiers in the SB this year:

Tier 1: app state, marshall
Tier 2: Louisiana, Troy, coastal
Tier 3: everyone else

Going to be a lot of dogfights and close games.

Like someone said earlier, it’s been a long long time since we went into a season having no idea what our record could be. For the last half dozen years, we could look at our schedule in August and almost assuredly say, yep, we are going 10-1/11-0 this year. The only unknown was usually how bad we’d get screwed in the seeding.

That’s not the case this year. Which is what makes this season so compelling. We are the great mystery in the SB.
I think every SBC team expects to beat JMU... or at least they should. They might expect a close competitive game but I'm sure every fan of their school expects to beat us.

"Expect" is too strong of a word for me for every team to use against us.. For example, I do expect Appy to beat us and will be shocked if the Mountaineers lose. However, I "think" Marshall will beat us, but not shocked if we win, especially since we're at home.

Are we talking about the same thing? I expect that JMU will be competitive and come out at or above 500. I feel the same way that you do. However, I'm talking about the opposing fan perspective and I don't think there's a team on our schedule outside of Norfolk State whose typical fanbase won't expect to beat the FBS-startup JMU.

I think we are. There's no way ODU, TX State, AR State, and GA Southern can in good conscience expect to beat us. It's simply too strong of an opinion for me. I really don't think Coastal and Marshall can say that either, but understand if they do. Thinking vs expecting is the difference.
I expect us to win 11 games this year.
Marshall,Coastal, App, Louisville... If we win 2 of those we could get 7 wins, book it

I honestly believe it will have more to do with game day coaching than personnel.

I would say preparation will be a huge factor.
Personnel isn't as critical as the players on the field doing their job. If they do their job and limit the mistakes we should be in every game.
As for the deciding factor, game day coaching is very important.
I think this team will surprise us (hopefully in a good way). I see this years team as a sign of what the next few years will bring. If we have a really good season, I expect us to be incredibly dangerous.
If we struggle, it may take some time to get there. We will get there, but perhaps may take a few more years.
