UT football: 5 takeaways from Jason Candle's 1st fall camp news conference

Hey, someone got him to admit penalties are a problem they need to fix. How about that. Also says they are not going to replace Bastien until after the season, but Kehres will go back to coaching LBs.

Penalties have a lot to do with Candle calling the offensive plays. No questions about the OL?????????????????????????????????

You would think the local media would be aware of the issues cited often about the O-line and pose a question of what is being done to shore up the OL - along with improving on the penalties from false starts, holding, etc.

What I don't understand is that we have Craig Kuligowski (just named to the UT HOF list for induction this year) and Nate Cole on the coaching staff. Neither is involved with coaching the O-line. I would want to have a D-I player that played on the O-line coaching the guys that are getting the most criticism - where we have the greatest vulnerability to success on the field. How many times have we been inside the red zone and can't punch the ball in with the running game? Kuligowski was a 2x first team All-MAC performer. He played his senior year under Saban. Think he might have learned a bit about technique and discipline? Then he coached a long, long time under Pinkel and later Saban - primarily on the defensive side of the ball. If I were Candle, I'd have Kuligowski spending more time watching the O-line play against his defense and D-line. He should be seeing a lot of what isn't working. We probably have the best DL and defense returning in the MAC this year - although watching how they fell apart in the bowl game was disturbing. I have to imagine both Cole - as the running backs coach, and K as the co-DC (along with Kehres who knows the Mt. Union connection between Candle and Hallett) can report to Candle what they see as shortcomings. It needs to be fixed.

These are just the ramblings of a fan who will readily admit all of those guys on the coaching staff have likely forgotten more about football than I know. But when I see a weakness out there that has been identified from various sources, you would think you'd see action being taken to fix it. Maybe that is the case - but it hasn't seemed to be an area of focus in the past few years. I see more of this: [Keep doing the same things and expect a different outcome...]. It's too many words to put on the back of the helmet as our new motto - and an acronym ( KDTSTAEADO) wouldn't be understood. Could shorten it to "Insanity"
I don't see many good things happening won lost record wise with this year's team, unless Finn can carry them with improvised play calls escaping danger. That is asking a lot of this young man. They lack a proven number one running back, perhaps running backs by committee will work. Defense should be excellent. Kicking game, now that is a big question mark to say the least. A 7-5 record won't cut it, maybe 8-4, better yet 9-3.
7-6 my prediction. I think if he goes 8-4 regular season, the new AD will extend him
11-3
Just no excitement with Candle at the helm…
I've felt a sense of the media downplaying the offensive line situation all off-season.

Tough to win when you can't take control in the trenches. An apt comparison may come from - Ohio State. They have excellent talent at all the skill positions, but both their offensive line and defensive line is questionable on the debate for national championship caliber teams. Their O-line is probably acceptable and may be a strong point this year. The D-line and line-backing (ie - the front 7) has been a problem. Some good talent, but as a unit - not good. Toledo has the opposite problem - strong up front on defense, not so much on the O-line (for MAC level quality comparisons).

The point is this - OSU rattled the cage on defense and fired all the defensive coaches except for Larry Johnson. They recognized the lack of performance and addressed it. Quickly. That is what a leader does. Especially when the school has more than enough money to fire you and buy out the contract. That was not the reason. The coach is proactive and impatient and doesn't want excuses. He expects accountability. Toledo seems to recognize there is a problem with the O-line. Not sure they even agree on that. So what happens? Instead of taking action, they talk about it, make excuses, promise improvement - and change nothing. Expect the same this year - and welcome the surprise if it somehow shows up in improved play as a result of actions taken that is not apparent to those outside the program. It's a stretch, but it could happen...

He probably is not interested in coaching OL, Cole might be but JC is really loyal to his staff

I’ve heard inside info that the RB from Maryland is a beast.
Whatever happen to that running back from Virginia ?

Offseason podcasts havent said much besides "hes making progress."

Stuart in certain plays from 2021 reminded me a lot of Adonnis Thomas. The 2nd punt block TD against Norfolk State was a blast of speed. At least 2 guys in that room have been around the past 2 seasons.
My son, who left after the bowl game...mentioned that Willie Shaw is very good, just undersized. Said the same about Lamy Constant; however, he felt Shaw was the better of the 2. He also heard from his buddies that the MD transfer is a big kid, but wasn't in shape (as of spring ball). Noticed that Jalynn Williams, who played DB & WR at UT, landed at Western Carolina and is in the running for their starting RB position. My son showed me a video from a scrimmage this weekend where he broke off a 70+ yard TD run.

Adkins left very very early in '21 season or even before. No twitter comments under old handle. Entered T-portal Dec '21. He announced he re-opened recruitment.

He came from Va equivalent of our D7

I heard Boone is looking really good and guys are having a hard time bringing him down.

He's a real competitor and will run hard every play.

He had that video back in spring ball of him hurdling a defender. I'm excited to see what he can produce in a UT uni.
Boone is bigger than every NFL starter height wise. Few weigh more. AJ Dillon is probably the closest comparable.
