Because he threatened to sue, and they needed documented cause…it’s not that complicated.

They’ve been sitting on documented cause for months. He was fired because someone had the balls to leak the report (and accompanying anonymous survey) to the media on Tuesday. It took from Tuesday until today for the Board of Regents to convince the AD to stop defending him.

They didn't need documented cause. His contract had expired. They can hire a new coach for whatever reason they want.

Warde Manuel wanted to keep him. He was still planning to give him an extension as of last week. Once the report went public, the Regents & acting President had other ideas.
Michigan has gotten pretty disgusting over the last few years. The molester enabler coverup. Howard hitting another coach. President writing sexual emails to employee and getting fired. Now this hockey stuff. They got a large toxic culture to clean up over there. At least they got $ flowing in to sweep it under the rug.

What he said. ^

Look up John U Bacon on Twitter if you want to read through the whole string of events this week.

Warde knew he had Mel over a barrel and Mel knew he wasn't going to get a better job than scUM, so both parties wanted to make it work, though surely Warde was trying to get Mel at a cheaper price. It is amazing how Warde fought the regents to allow him to rehire Mel.

Warde is a loser who allowed his men's bball coach to strike an opposing coach in the handshake line and wanted to re-hire an anti-semite who ran off high class player and treated players and school employees like 5hlt. How Warde Manuel hasn't been fired yet is another story onto itself.

So that was interesting. I think the report was supposed to be made public anyway, but with time running out in the college hockey offseason, it was going to happen sooner or later. This is not the Pentagon Papers being leaked.

I believe John Bacon had the report first and then Mlive was the first to actually post the whole report.
You’re missing the aspect that they asked him to resign before the contract expired. He refused and threatened litigation. So they had to let it all play out. I wouldn’t be shocked if Warde’s “loyalty” is just a CYA exercise.

Good point. Forgot about that.

They had all the ammo they needed in May to get past a lawsuit threat.
S/ have gone after Blashill while they had the chance.

If they want him, and he wants to return to college coaching, the fact that he took an assistant coach job in TB won’t be an issue they can’t overcome. That said, my feeling is he wants to stay at the NHL level; put in his dues to get a second crack at an NHL head coaching gig.

Yeah, I think he wants to stay in the NHL. And he’s set up perfectly to get a crack at another job being on TB’s staff. He & Cooper are good friends.

How much more if any do you think Blashill makes as an NHL assistant? Mel made $350k at scUM, so throw in country club memberships and various perks, probably pushing close to $500k.

It’s been many years since I last knew that kind of stuff, but around the time Blash left WMU ass’t. NHL, head AHL, and head NCAA D1 (at a top school) we’re all fairly close to equal.
UofM hired Naurato.

Narrato is the interim Coach.

Mike Hasting would be my choice to interview for the MI job and would be a big step up from Mankato. Sandelin next move would be NHL and Motzko isn't leaving for a long time. Those are the only other two jobs Hastings would consider. UMD would pick Larson over Hastings, so that means the MI job is very appealing for Hastings.

Bill Muckalt is probably not very happy about this.

Supposedly he’s remaining on staff.
