Anyone know anything about this guy besides what little the CA has said?
Schools like to use that position to hire someone with an existing relationship to a recruit (a la Milt Wagner) Who does the new guy know?
Memphis basketball coach Penny Hardaway has hired Garrett Kelly as director of basketball operations, The Commercial Appeal confirmed Friday.

Kelly succeeds Rodney Hamilton, who left the Tigers in April for an assistant coach position at Northwestern State after four seasons in Memphis.

Hardaway has at least two openings remaining on his staff (strength and conditioning coach and equipment manager). It's also unclear whether Hall of Famer Larry Brown will return to Memphis for a second season and, if so, in what capacity after serving as an assistant coach last season.

Kelly comes to Memphis from Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School in Georgia, where he served as coach of the Eagles' boys basketball team that finished 20-9.

Kelly's coaching career began at Division III Catholic University in Washington, D.C., where he was an assistant for the 2010-11 season. He spent two seasons at Radford, first as video coordinator then as director of basketball operations.

Kelly, a native of Asheville, N.C., also worked at Radford as director of basketball operations. He began his playing career as a walk-on at Loyola University in Maryland in 2007, before earning a scholarship before his senior season.

I'd rather have a transfer than a freshman. And with the transfer rule I'm not sure I would do my hiring based on who else he might persuade.

It's always interesting to put a coach in a non-coaching position.
I've seen the profile & CA write up. The GA school he's coming from is essentially a small, exclusive, private high school/prep school in the GA mtns. My questions are more, what got him on Penny's radar, what are his skills & connections that would cause Penny to hire him generally & specifically for this job?

I think Penny wanted one person on the staff and team who won't argue or second guess him...
