This is the year that EMU lost most of its QB depth. My person favorite to win the starting job is Taylor Powell 6'2 210 and a grad senior who threw for 1,251 yards and completed 125 out of 189 passes with 7 TDs BUT with 6 interceptions. Powell is the only QB on the roster with any significant FBS playing experience. Unlike many CC era QB's Powell is not a running threat. Behind him depth wise which is really scary are:

Austin Smith 6'2 212 a sophomore who has throw one pass in his
FBS career.

Cam'Ron McCoy 6'1 190 a true freshman.

Both Smith and McCoy played in the Spring game. Smith has more experience learning the offense.

Jeremiah Salem 6'3 185 is another true freshman who will have to learn the system.

Brooks Blount 6'0 185 jr. is a late addition a D3 JUCO. He will also have to learn the system from scratch.

EMU is has depth at many positions this year. QB is not one of them. If Powell gets hurt it will trial by fire for the remaining QBs on the roster. Keeping Powell healthy is the key to a winning season. Powell will also have to cut down on the interceptions.

Wonder if EMU will have Evans take the snaps on short yardage plays again this year. It seemed to work well last year but then other teams figured it out and it became less effective. Maybe have Evans throw a few passes out of that set.

Wooden are you talking about the wildcat formation?

100% CC will be using the wildcat

He will also probably take longer passes in the wildcat. Since he was a QB in high school and already took some passes last year.
It is CRUCIAL that we get our 2nd string guy some snaps early on in the season. I'm hoping we stick it to EKU and we can get someone else in for at least some experience
Smith will be the backup for at least the first half of the season because of his knowledge of the system, but I expect Blount to makes huge strides relatively quickly.
Well in the 2022 Football media guide the Depth chart is as follows:

QB 7 Taylor Powell 6-2 208 Sr.
19 Austin Smith 6-2 212 So.
I believe we will see a major upgrade in toughness at the QB position. Ben Bryant played like he was trying not to get hurt (we found out why at the end of the season) dude made 45 year old Tom Brady look like Michael Vick in his prime. I have a feeling the team will rally around Taylor Powell who will be a much better leader.

Bob - I agree 100% with your post. I watched a bit of last season’s game against WMU and he’s just not mobile in the pocket and took untimely sacks. I watched the spring game and I felt Powel looked good. For some reason, I believe this former 4 star recruit will blossom under Creighton.

Per CC, EMU was recruiting Powell last year when he transferred from Mizzou. He chose Troy instead then EMU landed Bryant but Powell was choice #1. Then Troy had a coaching change and Bryant left so Powell contacted EMU.

You can't make this sh!t up.

That's awesome! Everything happens for a reason.
Dear WoodenNickle,
You told it absolutely like it was. Were you at the meet and greet this evening? Because that is exactly how Coach Creighton told it.
Well to add some things, Bryant gave notice of transfer 48 hours after the bowl game. I did ask CC a question at the season ticket event I said a dual threat running QB has been a hallmark of your offense since you've been here so how is Powell's running ability. I also pointed out that Bryant was a decent runner. He said that Powell wasn't in the same class as Glass III or Hutchinson and neither was Bryant (who can remember him starting Reggie Bell Jr. over Roback) and that Bryant was a good athlete and Powell is too or in other words Powell can run as well as Bryant. I didn't argue with CC but I honestly disagree if Powell is the only experience QB on your roster do you really WANT him be running the ball? I don't think so. I think Bryant is a better runner. Not to say Powell isn't an athlete just an athlete will different abilities.

Bryant has a great arm but he simply held the ball way too long in the pocket and giving up too many sacks.

I'm not so concerned about a running quarterback as I am a quarterback who can feel pressure and scramble some while still making his reads downfield. That was my knock against Bryant. I felt he was too quick to tuck and run, or worse, tuck and take the hit in the backfield. He just didn't appear to want to scramble to make time for his receivers to try to get open. It was primary read...scan the field back...give up , tuck the ball and try to run up the middle or drop if the pressure was on him.

My hope is that Powell will be a little more aggressive in the backfield so that he can make a third or fourth read downfield and find that open guy (perhaps a Tight End coming off a block).
A potential depth QB this season and starter next year

Not sure we have a scholarship open for the upcoming season. Maybe 2023.
I’m not seeing the connection here.
