May try to stop UCLA P12 exit.

Real or just a way for him to have more publicity?

Does this really need its own thread?

He is head of The Board of Regents. Worried about effect on Cal Berkeley?
He probably thinks they're moving the entire university to the midwest.
I prefer the pre-covid days when you were lucky to know who the governor of your own state was let alone the governors of half of them.

It sucks that I actually know who this guy is.
Never imagined this thread would go the way it has.

I can't believe UCLA's legal team gave this NO consideration. In the end, I don't see UCLA getting blocked from joining the B1G. Who has been prevented from joining another conference?
Newsome is probably more bothered that most of the B10 states are on the flyover country CA no visit list. .

Better to ask forgiveness than permission

All bluster and talk in to long run, like most politicians.
Newsom: How exactly is this beneficial to UCLA?!

UCLA: *holds up bags of money*

They aren't going to stop it, some of them will just whine about it.

Ohio, Indiana, and Iowa are that list lol.
Any updates from the Gov stopping UCLA's entry into the B1G? Hopefully, there's more pressing issues facing his fellow Californians...

Call me crazy but conference affiliation for freaking 18-23 year olds playing sports is not exactly a university-wide mission critical issue requiring a governor's direct interference. This is nothing but theater for a quick news cycle by a guy who is addicted to the limelight.

It's a win-win for him. I believe it's been noted already but he looks good to general public trying to keep USC and UCLA in Pac 12 or more importantly with CAL even if they go which they will, and if they somehow pull out a miracle he looks good keeping the conference together.
Politicians dipping their toes in conference realignment is nothing new. Here's a funny Manchin-Mconnell spat from 2012:

Quote:"McConnell read aloud to Manchin a quote from a university official who said “no improper political influence” had been exerted as each senator was lobbying to get his team the plush conference spot. And McConnell demanded a public apology from Manchin for suggesting that the GOP leader may have acted in an “inappropriate or unethical” manner that could warrant a Senate investigation into his Louisville lobbying efforts.

Manchin refused to back down and said he would always stand up for West Virginia’s rights — not to mention the Mountaineer’ football team.

The two senators have barely spoken since."

Back in 2016, Greg Abbot pushed for Houston to get into the Big 12 and Kasich put in support for our bid as well:

Quote:"Kasich last month told Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby and each of the league's member presidents that UC would be an "outstanding choice to expand the conference's reach and nationwide appeal," according to a letter exclusively obtained by The Enquirer.

"I am convinced that the University of Cincinnati will be a strong, competitive addition to the Big 12 Conference and I fully support such a move," Kasich wrote in a July 12 letter."

Newsome must be like a liberal Desantis or something. Slimey, governor of a big state with a diverse voting pool, people think they represent a firebrand political ideology, both are more concerned with being in the news cycle than governing. I think Newsom's ex is now even dating Don Trump Jr. These people are the swampiest of the swamp, if that wasn't clear.

If the Pac 12 falls apart Cal Berkley may well have to choose between going to a MWC type of league or disbanding football entirely. That's a massive state flagship with a 6.8 billion dollar endowment being forced into a move that could potentially cost them millions annually in television money, marketing, etc. I would absolutely expect the governor of any state to address an issue like that.

Hell, Texas politics is how a few of our new conference mates found their way into the Big 12.
Is he still lookin' into it?
