Well this could get complicated to some degree... fascinating!

Quote:The Western Athletic Conference is changing how it seeds its postseason basketball tournaments by introducing an intrepid, evolutionary concept to the sport. The 2022-23 season will see the WAC's men's and women's basketball standings be determined not just by conference wins and losses, but also an algorithm that rewards and/or punishes based off performance against all teams they face in the regular season.

In what's believed to be a first in the history of college sports: a conference will seed its postseason tournament based on advanced analytics.

This means that, in the WAC, it's possible a team could finish with the second-best league record but end up seeded, say, fourth or fifth. Conversely, a team with the eighth-best record but with a more impressive résumé of wins could be rewarded for its degree of difficulty and earn a higher seed than its place in the traditional conference standings.
I like it. Try something new. Doesn’t really effect much.
Maybe it will make us (marginally) more likely to send a good team to the NCAA.

But it's going to take a lot of the excitement out of the late regular season games.

And I also think conference titles ought to be determined strictly in conference. This is just the seed but it's still going to have influence.
It might be worth analyzing. Have the proponents looked at past years to see what the effect might truly be? If the goal is to get the best team or teams into the NCAA tourney, then a double elimination conference tournament would be the most likely to achieve the desired result, but a double elimination tournament couldn't guarantee a televised championship.

I do not believe we will see a double-elimination basketball tournament.

What we are seeing is a method to handle the unbalanced scheduling that will exist in 22-23 and probably to some degree going forward with the amount of teams in the league.

This will also help as others have said, help with seeding in the NCAA postseason as higher NET rankings will lead to higher seeds particularly if these better NET squads are protected in the WAC tournament. Better seed, more likely opportunity at wins and more chances for $$$ for all. Basketball postseason is driving this!
I like it where conference seeding is settled on the court during conference play, and not by some algorithm. If WAC schools just win games, they don't need some equation to "maybe" gain a one seed advantage in the NCAA tournament. Basketball is a sport where NMSU can roll into GCU and Seattle and come out with two road wins then stubble their foot in Chicago a week later. An algorithm can't predict that out.
Algorithm or no algorithm, you still have to win games.

I like this idea.
As long as NMSU is in the WAC, the WAC is pretty much assured the best team (NMSU) will represent them in the NCAA tourney...05-stirthepot
Good idea to try for a year or two-- then evaluate. We have to do something to try to counter the bias toward P5 schools. The WAC and others need to use EVERY idea they can to maximize success.

Just want to let you know that the WAC has more dignity than the Southland.

If you and SHSU find yourselves wanting out of C-USA after a single year, we aren't taking you back no matter how much you beg.

That’s why we’re gonna make a copy of our key before we leave and hope you don’t change the locks.

It used to be you change conferences and you know you’d be there for at least a decade. Now who knows where anyone will be or which conferences will even exist in a decade.

Ha! They way realignment is shaking things up again, there's a possibility we won't even make it to CUSA. Who knows?
