Decent article on a decent guy, who had no business being a head coach. Some mention of UAB.

There’s a reason why we were his only head coaching job, and that reason is not a good one.

I always felt a bit bad for Coach Callaway. He didn’t ask for the circumstances of how he was hired. He didn’t get what he was promised in support from certain people, either. He tried to clean up a program that had gone off the rails on the field and was being kneecapped off it. His teams played hard but were really hamstrung by the NCAA APR limits and the backstabbing of the board. The teams were actually close to winning 5-7 ballgames most of those years but could rarely catch a break. Whatever you think about Callaway — and he definitely was a solid assistant not really head coach material — he was a good notch better than the guy who folllowed him who did things like run off players for dumb reasons, run them ball every play of a half to spite people and kick off to the opponent in both halves.

I agree 100%. He had us competitive in a lot of games, but just couldn’t get the W. He seemed like a really nice dude off the field, just wasn’t able to put it all together on the field.
