Yesterday I watched the Ole Miss-Memphis softball game. A very close friend of our family is Caitlyn Riley, a freshman pitcher for OM. So we watch her games on ESPN+ and SEC+ whenever we can and are in conversations with family members about each game, as it happens. She was Tennessee female athlete of the year in 2021 as a high school senior. She originally signed with UAB but switched to OM later in her recruiting. I sent info on her to our softball coaches when she was a junior. Her dad, Spencer Riley was the center on the Tennessee team when Payton Manning was QB. Our families go way back to the 1960's and have been friends all these years. Anyway, enough of the history.
I watched the game on ESPN+ which was ended after 5 innings with OM up 11-0. OM is a mid range SEC school. I think they are in 8th place. To make a long story short...we were barely in the game and have now lost 6 straight games. I think OM had two home rons, one was a grand slam. Not sure what is going on with softball but.....we have a long way to go to be competitive.
Maybe someone more familar with the team can comment.
observation: They stink and the coach is worse than Rock
HS softball is weak in Shelby county.
I can’t think of the last area team to compete for a state championship.

St Benedict, Covington, Collierville, Rosemark, Dyer Co, and JCS all made the championship tournament last year

I suppose we’ll parse words then over the difference of “qualifying” for the state tournament & actually “competing” for a state title. Someone has to qualify, but that is not legitimately competing.

Covington lost 1st round 13-0 & did not win a game.
Collierville lost 1st round 11-0 & did not win a game
Dyer County won 1 game.
St Benedict won 1 game in the small… everyone qualifies for the state tournament… Div 2 AA division.

The only sign of life was TRA & JCS playing in 4 team “state tournament” in Div 2- A division.

There is little in the way of competitive softball & the truly talented girls have to find teams out of Georgia, Florida & Alabama. Unless we invest significantly in recruiting & resources, we’ll always struggle in softball.
It seems like one of the best states for high school softball is Florida. If you look at FSU, Florida and UCF and sometimes USF, they are ranked really high on a consistent basis. Maybe we should focus on recruting there.

Agreed…
Both baseball & softball need to do a better job of recruiting areas where there is more depth & talent.
I have watched the lady tigers play several games in the past 5-6 years. They need a total Rehaul like the baseball program. The womens team is not competitive and coaching\recruiting needs a lot of help
Didn’t Ole Miss steal our coach a few years ago? Maybe a decade ago?

Thees. She lasted 3yrs at OM (she also had some off the field stuff that caused a shorter leash). She is coach at Winthrop now.

07-coffee307-coffee3 Are they going to allow transgenders to play women's softball ? That could be the answer to having a winning team if they recruit 11 (???) to play. They may have a good chance against a true women's team.

Come back home Windy come back home.

Every pitcher on that team has allowed more hits, then innings pitched. The pitching staff has allowed over 450 hits, to 317 innings.
They have also stuck out 179 hitters to the 317 innings. They don't have "swing and miss" stuff. This roster is just flat out bad.
Our athletic dept is a complete shiteshow

Thanks lard vatech

Apology letter expected

They are in last place in AAC with a record of 2-13. Last weekend, they went 0-3 at WichSt losing by a combined 43-4. Also lost 3 at UCF by combined 18-0 & lost 3 at Houston by a combined 19-4. Outscored 80-8 in those 9 games. Simply uncompetitive and embarrassing. By the way; baseball & softball lost to North Alabama this year 10-0 & 6-0, respectively.

03-thumbsup
I was watching some college softball tonight and it made me kick myself that I didn't go to games back when I was a student. (as a way to get in good with the cuties)

I would rather watch college softball than baseball because I despise the "DINK!" of the aluminum bats in baseball. Yes, I'm behind the times and an ol' fuddy-duddy, etc.

I agree. If I was younger....much younger....attending softball games would have been a good idea.

Softball team has been shut out 12 times year. Hopefully there is a change at the end of the year
