I'm often political on this board, but I'm going to say something non-partisan about Fred Upton. When I was on Capitol Hill, I'd run into Justin Amash, introduce myself, and tell him I was from his district. Amash would proceed to run away from me, like he had a million things better to do than talk to me.

But not Fred Upton. Hell, I'm not even from his district. But I would say hello to Fred, introduce myself and tell him I went to WMU and used to live in SW MI. I did this a few times. Fred would stop and say hello and ask me what I was doing in town and what I did at WMU and how long I was there, etc. Many good politicians are very good at feigning interest, but I never really got this from Fred. He seemed genuinely happy to meet me and briefly talk to me. That meant a lot.

I disagree with Fred on most issues, but I appreciate his real bipartisanship and genuinely believe he was working to improve life for residents of his district. Washington will be a worse place without Fred.
^ Ditto to last paragraph.
He didn't suck-up to Trump, and spread Trumps lies like the rightwing nut-jobs..

Good.

Don't pretend you liked the guy, guys.
His party (my former party) has been taken over by MAGA zealots and Qanon crazies.

Fred stood up to fascism. Too bad you can't say the same for yourself.
Bummed to see Upton retire, but I get it. The party has gone off the rails, with the likes of Boebert, MTG, Gaetz, Cawthorn, DeSantis, etc., being the faces of the GOP now. The rational, pragmatic ones are either getting purged and/or relentlessly attacked by the new base. I can't imagine what Upton's voice mailbox was like after he voted for impeachment.

He'll likely get replaced by some Trump sycophant who will try to convince us elections in America are fake & plotting to kidnap the Governor of Michigan is OK.

Bill Huizenga, close enough
I lived in Fred's district. We need more Fred Upton's in Congress. Not less.
This thread making me optimistic :)
I applaud Congressmen Upton and Meijer for standing up for what is right. IMO, the republicans need these type of men to lead the party.
