Rough offseason for the league with a lot of top players leaving. Currently the League Player of the year, League Defensive Player of the year, and League Freshman of the year plus an All SBC First team pick are all in the portal

Overall Coastal and Arkansas State lead with 6 players each in the Portal. South has the fewest, but that's likely because you can only transfer for free once, and half that team is transfers.
The transfer portal has good and bad parts about it. Good that it allows for a chance for the player to get out of what they think is not a good fit for them. Bad for continuity and building a strong team.

Sixth man of the year Elijah McCadden is in the portal too from Georgia Southern but might not leave the SBC, has visited JMU.
It's a sad situation. It no longer makes any sense for midmajors to sign promising freshman and develop them. If they become good enough to move "up", I just don't think it is likely that you will keep them. The Transfer Portal and the one time "free transfer" were bad enough. Now with the NIL, the P5 schools will also be able to "legally" offer big financial payoffs for transferring. Midmajors just need to learn to "play the game" and sign the 3*, and even 4* players, that are sitting on the bench at P5 schools. Although this may get harder as even bench players start to get lucrative NIL deals at some of these schools.
Imo, a mid major school can only develop a culture of continuity at the program level to prevent kids from leaving. Teach kids to buy into the program, create an environment to feel pride in the school, and have likable coaches to maintain relationship. Then have those kids pass down the same culture to the younger guys, and repeat. We were fortunate to have 7 juniors/seniors this year, who witnessed Simonds and his core of senior teammates play together until 2018, who saw RJ Hunter and his group of seniors play together until 2015, and so forth. Yes easier said than done, no other way to compete with high majors.

I think your last sentence sums up my thoughts. The free one time transfer only started last year. Not sure if the official Portal existed before that. Having a great culture certainly can help to some extent. But, if a young kid is being offered fame (playing in a P5 league that is on TV regularly) and fortune (significant NIL deals), without having to even sit out a year, I'm not sure many will be able to turn that down.

Where you seeing 6 for Coastal? We are only aware of 3.

Don’t get me wrong, we won’t be surprised, we’re an annual revolving door of “maybe THESE six JUCOs will pan out… oops, nope… get rid of them and get 6 more” under Ellis.

Just curious.

Ahh, thanks. Though two of them (Griggs and Smith) actually left back after first semester. Still count, just out of mind by now. How sad is that? Like I said, we are used to it.

Even worse, two of those guys, Milner and Griggs, were walk-ons who got spots because we couldn’t fill all our schollies. I don’t think we’ve had a full roster for almost a decade. Can’t keep all the spots full, between one and done (or less!) JUCO’s or guys Cliff can’t get along with.

It’s shameful. I’d guess we’ve averaged 10-11 scholly players a year for some time. Their high strikeout rate suggests a good chunk of the 10-11 shouldn’t have had a scholly in the first place.
In a positive twist Mason Harrell has announced he is coming back to TXST for his last year of eligibility!
We should be hearing some things from USM in the next couple of weeks. We did snag Austin Crowley who played at Ole Miss last season earlier this week.
Add another from Coastal. Hippolyte has entered the portal.
Good news for Marshall as Taveion Kinsey announced yesterday he is coming back. Going into last year Kinsey was a projected second round NBA pick, but his stock dropped after this year. Primary reason for this was he moved from the 3 spot to more of a combo PG and struggled. All of Marshall's key players are returning, but when you only win 12 games that is not saying much. The key is they need to get a PG through the portal and are currently looking at two of them (FIU and VMI).
