The tv show needed ratings
The Academy needed a headline.
Will Smith has been neutered by everyone for 2 years, including his wife, over her infidelities and his willingness to take it. He needed to prove his "manhood" again.
Evidence:
No security removal.
No charges filed.
Smith did use a slap instead of a punch. (Dude played Muhammad Ali!)
Smith didn't use his entire force.
Rock stood there and took it and did nothing in return.
The joke that "set Smith off" was much more harmless than other things being said about him and his wife.
He is an ACTOR.
