So you guys will have 13 teams again next year and going forward. Will you try to get a 14th, and if so, who? If not who is the one team you expect to lose to C-USA?

What’s wrong with 13? It’s not like they need another one for a specific sport.

NMSU and SHSU are leaving for CUSA

As for a 14th school in the WAC

I think its a race between

TAMCC
WSU (You pick the WSU you want)
Ball Hard U
UCONN
The Evergreen St
HBU

No be in all honesty who knows. I think the WAC shrinks to 12 before 14.
If the WAC expands, the ideal is adding a football school

The league could use a ninth school to give four home/four away games.

Abilene Christian
Incarnate Word
Lamar
Southern Utah
Stephen F Austin
Tarleton State
Utah Tech
UTRGV

I do think the WAC is likely to shrink first to 12 schools, with the high likelihood it is a football-playing member (i.e. Tarleton) going to C-USA.

I was under the impression that there would be 15 schools next year and then only 13 the year after. Is this incorrect?

(1) Seattle
(2) Cal Baptist
(3) Southern Utah
(4) Utah Valley
(5) Utah Tech
(6) Grand Canyon
(7) NMSU
(8) UTRGV
(9) UT Arlington
(10) SFA
(11) SHSU
(12) ACU
(13) UIW
(14) Tarleton
(15) Lamar

No, you’re correct. 15 for 22-23 and 13 for 23-24 (at the moment).

Yet, although not actually or visibly shown, but one division consists of only Texas schools, and the other division consists of the schools in the Western US. Should the WAC expand for a 14th school after the departures of Sam Houston State and New Mexico State, it has to be in the Western states, probably a D-II callup for full membership (with football and basketball as main priorities, to help keep football its automatic bid for the FCS playoffs).

In a perfect world, SU would find another conference and tighten up geography a bit. If not, yes, hope you can find a school in New Mexico or further west to “balance” out the divisions. However, it’s slim pickings out west and I don’t know of any serious candidates to move from D2 and it’s highly unlikely any Big Sky, Big West, or WCC team would join the WAC at this point.

Never going to happen.

Right. Just saying that it would have to be west of Texas. I know ENMU, WNMU, NNMU, and all the others are “never” going D1.
Thank goodness it isn't a perfect world.

If the University of New Mexico doesn't want it, its not going to happen.

You didn't specifically rule out New Mexico Highlands. I'm going to read lots of deep meaning into that.

As you should! They just need a donor like Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos to pay for their stadium and arena upgrades. Then they COULD be on the D1 radar!! WAC/CUSA/Big 12/Southland possibilities!

personally I hope you guys stay in the WAC. You guys and NMST were my favorites when we were in the WAC the first time

I would personally, rather stay in the WAC too. Yeah, if the WCC came calling, SU would join in a second and I would be okay with that. I only care about basketball and I don’t think SU would be more successful in the WCC, than they possibly can in the WAC.

I would much rather play competitive games vs GCU, UTA, SFA, CBU, and UVU then get slaughtered by Gonzaga and St Marys twice a year. Especially with Chicago State leaving, the WAC is only going to get better. Seattle has no real shot of getting to Gonzaga or St Mary’s level. Look at all the other non-BYU schools, lucky to get NIT consideration.
Don't we already have a 200+ page expansion conversation going somewhere in here? ?

It was closed the same as the recent thread about San Diego. This one will probably get shutdown soon.
The way WAC inter divisional schedules work, travel costs to Seattle are minimal. There is no reason SU shouldn’t remain in the WAC as long as they are competitive. They enhance our academic profile, if nothing else.

The San Diego thread was closed because this one was already up. No need for multiple threads about possible expansion.
