My wife has a friend who lives there, works for some pharmaceutical company and can live anywhere. He just spent 2 weeks in FLA house hunting. Said NYC is a complete s-hole now, getting killed on taxes. I’ve always kinda thought he was an idiot for paying almost $4k a month in rent to be on a 40th something floor in midtown Manhattan. Couldn’t pay me $4000 a month to live like that. I finally told him - wtf are you waiting for?? Florida - better weather, lower taxes, less Democrats. Why has it taken you this long???

Policies based on fantasy concepts and how they make you feel about yourself for supporting them instead of being based on actual human nature and trail and error.
I lived in NYC in 2002, that was where they would sell fake bags, sneakers, and watches on the street then. This is probably much of the same.

I was in NYC this month and it feels about the same as it always has over the las 20 years.

But seriously, doesn't it make you go, "wait, NYC is a Democratically run city, why am I a Democrat?" I'm sure you've seen how any Democratically run city or state is a state of destruction, it's in the news all the time, even on the MSM, they sometimes put out a news item telling you that. Yet, you're here defending this party. Think man...

I’m not particularly a democrat, I’m a GW Bush era fiscal conservative / social moderate who hates Trump and the batch of Q-a-tards who followed.

NYC is NYC, it has its own unique feel and still feels the same. I lived there in 2002 and have been back a few trips each year. Some people don’t like big cities, but New York as a whole feels the same as when Rudy was mayor. Doesn’t have quite the sense of unity that it had in the first few post 911 years like when I was living there. This is my second trip back since covid and this point it doesn’t seem particularly different than pre-covid NYC at least in Manhattan.

I don’t take public transit and I stay in nice hotels so maybe I’m missing some “state of destruction” that I would have noticed riding the F train every day 20 years ago.

WFH if is continued at JPMC/Goldman/Citi/MorganStanley will hurt the city real estate market somewhat, but apartments cost $4k a month because people want to live there. I wouldn’t move back but it was fun for a year that I have no regrets about, I consider living in NYC and Switzerland as being the two places that offered the most development of my world perspective. I’d move back to French speaking Switzerland in a heartbeat once my kids are out of the house.

I lived in Manhattan for several years from the mid/late 90s through the mid 2000s and I’d guess it’s more like 750 sqft at this point for $4k in one of the newer towers. And it could very likely be a 5-600 sqft studio if in a nicer building.

My last place was maybe 800 in an ok, not great part of the city, older building with no amenities outside of a doorman working Thurs-Sat nights, $2400 a month. It was fine as a 20 something, but not a place I’d live in almost 20 years later. And I’m guessing the rent at that place would be north of $4k now.

According to my friends still at the big firms, WFH is done or about to be. One at BofA just got her return to work order. My cousin at MS has been back for a while. Other friends at PE shops have been back for a while after basically taking extended vacations for a year. I have another friend who went over to Goldman near the beginning of the Covid who didn’t set foot in the building until a couple months ago. The joys of being a senior VP or managing director, I suppose.

I’ve been back to the city several times since I left. Bloomberg did a great a great job of continuing Rudy’s policies wrt crime prevention. DeBlasio, IMO was a bit of a disaster on that front pre covid and was a complete disaster during it.

I get that you didn’t see the difference, but I sure have. Venturing outside of the fifth ave, south of Central Park, touristy areas brought that to light when I went last year. Fewer tourists, old haunts gone, masking and passports required everywhere. The spirit of the city seemed broken.

NYC has been liberal for a long time, but it was always a f*** the man, freespirated kind of mentality. That wasn’t there the last time I visited.

But kudos for avoiding the subway; I learned that lesson after my first summer and took cabs to work everyday. 04-cheers

Edited to add that Geneva was by far the best place I traveled to for work. I did a deal there working with a company just across the border and had some of the best meals of my life. Much better than Zurich.

I was living in Lausanne and it was a great spot to easily get around from. TGV to Paris, boats to Evian, and SBB up and down the lake. Was a great home base, the people were incredibly nice, and there was a large expat community with meet ups.
