Meaningless, but fun nonetheless. After beating Temple we finally have land on the imperialism map again. Here's to hoping we keep it this time. 02-13-banana

The map isn't completely insignificant, just mostly. At the beginning of the season, every team owns the land in its own territory, however big that may be. As games are played, you take all of the land "owned" by the team you beat, or you lose all of the land you "owned" when a team beats you. After beating Temple we took all of the land that they "owned" prior to playing us, and there we are all over the map.

Just a feel good thing, but it's still fun.
Dumbest map since the one Columbus used.
This map is uber excellent! I am right there in Northern Cali --first inland county underneath Oregon. luv it.

Sounds like you must live near Crescent City. Spent a bit of time on the coast there, among the redwoods, several years ago. Beautiful country you have. Still remember the barking sea lions in the harbor, and some of the best smoked salmon I've ever eaten was from the Native Americans who fish the Klamath River.

Good times...

Ah, Shasta. Impressive the way it dominates the landscape, classic stratovolcano shape too. Unfortunately we didn't have time to stop, though we very much enjoyed traveling through Lassen on the way to Yosemite.

We won't be going all the way out to California this year, stopping short to wander through Arizona and Utah, but we absolutely have it on the short list to get back. Hard to beat Northern Cali. You truly live in an amazing part of the country.
Why are there less than 10 teams on this map total? looks like mostly us, UNLV, Iowa and Arkansas. Memphis is on my home area... i live in Oregon just a few miles north of the Cali border

I will try my best to explain. The process is essentially a way to show which teams would control territory if it mirrored how human conquest and wars for territory worked throughout history. Best way to think of it might be to consider how a map of North America would have looked over time. Initially it would have been divided into many areas, controlled by the various Indian tribes. As the Europeans came in, they would conquer more and more territories, consolidating the land into fewer and fewer hands. Eventually, North America would be controlled by only three countries, or "teams" if you will.

Consider it just another way to visualize data. It doesn't mean much in a formal sense, but it does show who would have what land if the game of basketball were a series of human wars for territory. With that said, a major change has already occurred to the map. Any territory that you saw owned by Kentucky now belong to Arkansas. If Wichita were to beat us today, any land we currently own will change over to the Shockers and you would see them on the map instead of us.

Hope that provides some degree of clarity.

That's how it works. They've recently won against teams that had a lot of territory to take, such as Kentucky. Explains why they have a strong presence on the map.

There are no profound revelations to be had in the map. It's strictly for entertainment, but it does give an idea of which teams have been beaten by the teams we beat.
Latest map, for the haters. Our land is unchanged due to Wichita State having no land. Arkansas continues to gobble up more. Boise State with a strong presence after beating UNLV.

Why does Alaska have multiple territories? There are no DI programs in that state so all of it should initially belong to oneschool, I'm guessing Washington.
