I don’t like this, it seems like we are trying to be WVU by going around singing country roads.

WVU doesn't own that song

This is true. However, whenever I hear that in a bar around here it is always some WVU Walmart fan that played it. And they all chime in and make it about the school and not the state.

That said, I think if you are out of state it is perfectly "legal" to play it to claim where you're from.

I think John Denver crashed his plane when he found out the scumbag fans of New Jersey and Pennsylvania exploited his song to give themselves a heritage they didn't earn, but bought.

I'm in the crowd that used to like the (Geograpically inaccurate) song before the hilljacks took it over...Kinda like how, when we do our karaoke event for work, I almost refuse to let someone do "Sweet Caroline" cuz they ruin that one too

FWIW, the country roads Denver was singing about were in Maryland.
Hell I sing that song if i hear it at a restaurant and I'm not even from WV. I'm from VA if they counts.

Let's not lose sight of the main point here -

As Coastal Carolina has learned, Marshall is coming soon to your SBC town and is gonna be doing some big celebrating...
Yeah, going to Coastal and Horry County makes people weird.

And the song is about returning home to WV via those country roads. Don't see a point there. If the roads were in WV they wouldn't be taking him back to WV.
Seemed like a cool moment to me, but I don't know much about the degree to which WVU lays claim to the song.

Also must note its greatest cover. RIP Toots...

Sort of. The original songwriters were from Maryland and were driving home from another place in Maryland when they wrote it. They played it for John Denver, and the three of them reworked the lyrics into the song we all know.

-Fun, trivial (in the truest sense of the word) fact of the day.
